Z GRILLS ZPG-200APro: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-19
Summary
Owners mostly fight the same few chores: grease that runs down the inside of the lid and out the back instead of into the drip tray, a small firepot that needs cleaning every two or three smokes, and a hopper with no dump door on the base unit. Keeping it running costs hardwood pellets plus foil for the drain pan and heat deflector, and a meat thermometer if your unit shipped without a probe. It is a good buy at $100-135 and hard to justify above $175.
Common problems and fixes
- Grease runs down the inside of the lid and out the back — The Gadgeteer found spatter leaking “out the back and into the interior” rather than landing in the drip tray; Burning Brisket recommends foiling the heat deflector from day one to make cleanup manageable. The 3-year warranty excludes corrosion and paint, so treat this as routine maintenance, not a claim. [5][4][2]
- Small firepot needs cleaning every few cooks — Burning Brisket cleans the firepot every 2-3 smokes, more often than a full-size pellet grill; the manual says to let the grill cool completely and unplug it before any inspection or cleaning. [4][1]
- Hopper has no dump door on the base unit — Burning Brisket: “there is no proper dump door. You either burn through what is in there or awkwardly tip the unit.” Current Pro-era copies claim a hopper cleanout, so confirm which revision your order ships. [4][19][20]
- It needs mains power — the igniter, auger and fan all run on 110 V AC, so camping or tailgating means an inverter or a portable power station; there is no 12 V option. [1][3][4]
- It will not sear over open flame — the heat deflector stays in place at every setting, so “sear” and “char-grill” describe temperature and smoke, not direct flame; food sits close to the deflector, so flip it during longer cooks. [4]
- Warranty support can be slow — in r/smoking threads, one owner under warranty was sent a fan and then a controller, neither of which fixed the fault, and then chased a promised replacement hopper for roughly 4-5 months; other owners report 4-7+ years of trouble-free use and one had a faulty temperature probe replaced within a week. These are brand-wide reports, not specific to this model. [6][7][8]

Yearly running cost
Not enough data for a computed yearly total. No wattage figure for this grill was published anywhere, so the electricity share cannot be computed either.
When it is a good buy
Retailer mirrors checked October 2026 show the same ZPG-200APro copy at $124.00 (Model #3060906) [11], $140.75 (Model #6421091) [12], $135.25 [14], $166.25 [15], $173.50 [16], $176.25 [17], $93.50 [18] and $52.00 [26] — a 3.4x spread for identical copy, so treat these as a band rather than a market price. A non-Pro ZPG-200A mirror shows $18.50 beside internet number 538190 [27], and the 200A PID V2.0 copy shows $115.00 [13]. Thresholds: under $100 is strong value if the seller is legitimate and inside the authorized-seller warranty rule; $100-135 is good value; $136-175 is fair to weak; above $175 there is no argument for it.
- Traeger Ranger — listed at $479.99 by Traeger [9]; the better choice when you want the included cast-iron griddle and meat probe. Burning Brisket judges the Cruiser offers more cooking space and a lower price, while the Ranger adds a griddle and a probe [4].
- Pit Boss PB150PPG — 256 sq. in. in the same $136-175 band [4][23][24]; the better choice when grate area matters more than footprint.
