Summary
A large, handled, vacuum-insulated stainless-steel straw mug built for cold drinks through long days at a desk, in a car or at the gym. Check the lid before you buy: the press-fit straw lid is splash-resistant, not leakproof, and it is not meant for hot drinks.
Strengths
- 42 oz means fewer refills through long desk, driving or gym sessions, and the handle makes the full mug easier to lift.
- Double-wall vacuum steel insulates without the condensation of single-wall cups.
- YETI sells the right replacement parts: $10 Extra Large Straw Lid, $10 Large MagSlider Lid, $10 L/XL silicone straw pack.
- Dishwasher-safe components make daily care simple.
- The molded straw stopper keeps the straw from falling into the mug during normal drinking.
- 18/8 steel resists routine corrosion and punctures, and the five-year warranty covers manufacturing defects.
Weaknesses
- The straw lid is not leakproof: liquid escapes through the straw opening when the mug tips, so never pack it sideways in a bag.
- A full mug weighs about 4.46 lb, and the 5.2-in width can hit a console or dashboard even when the base fits the holder.
- The straw lid is not for hot drinks; the MagSlider swap works but still spills if upended.
- The long reusable straw needs real cleaning after protein shakes or sweet tea, beyond what dishwasher jets reach.
- Handle finish chipping shows up in owner reports, and cosmetic wear is excluded from the warranty.
- Seasonal colors have unstable availability and pricing; the lowest advertised color is not the default price.

Leaks and the straw lid
The 42-oz Straw Lid intentionally leaves a drinking passage open. A Public Lands owner complained of liquid coming through and around the straw and bought a sliding replacement lid; another exact-model owner described leakage from a toppled mug. This is a design limitation, not a faulty gasket. One r/YetiCoolers owner reported the press-fit lid popping out after trouble-free use; the first advice was to check whether the silicone gasket had been reinstalled upside down. Inspect fit, gasket orientation, cracks and debris before assuming a defect.
Weight, cupholder fit and hot drinks
At 42 oz of water the mug weighs about 4.46 lb before ice. YETI specifies a minimum 3-inch cupholder opening and advises measuring the actual car; shape, depth, console clearance and handle space still matter. The straw lid is not intended for hot beverages. The optional Large MagSlider Lid works with hot drinks but only inhibits splashes; use a closed travel mug if leakproof hot commuting is essential.
Cleaning and upkeep
Mug, lid and straw are dishwasher-safe. YETI recommends the lid on the top rack and straw and gaskets in the utensil basket, cleaned disassembled and left to dry. A dishwasher rating does not stop residue building inside a reusable straw after protein shakes or sweet tea; remove the straw and gasket and clean the crevices. Expect to inspect the gasket after sugary drinks.
Parts and running costs
There are no required consumables: with tap water and the included straw, YETI parts cost $0 a year. Replacement timing is based on loss, cracks or poor sealing, not a schedule. YETI sells the Extra Large Straw Lid for $10, the Large MagSlider Lid for $10 and the L/XL silicone straw pack for $10, all direct from YETI in October 2026. Buying a $10 lid once every two years averages $5 a year, an illustration rather than a manufacturer interval. No official standalone rigid straw or gasket-only part is sold; the $10 lid assembly is the fit-safe route. Handle, body and vacuum shell are not owner-replaceable parts; a manufacturing fault goes through warranty service.
Is it worth it?
YETI’s own site showed $31.50, down from $45, for select 42-oz colors in October 2026; Tractor Supply listed ordinary colors at $45, and Dick’s advertised sale variants between $28.97 and $34. At $30 or less new from a trustworthy seller it is excellent value; $30–$35 is a good sale; $35–$45 is reasonable for the size, replaceable lid and warranty if a spill-resistant straw design suits you. Above $45, YETI’s newer 40-oz Travel Straw Mug at $48 has a threaded, leakproof lid, though its lid does not fit this mug. At the same $45 level, the Stanley Quencher H2.0 FlowState 40 oz is about 1.18 lb empty versus 1.72 lb, and the Owala FreeSip 40-oz at $44.99 is advertised by its maker as leakproof with a lockable spout.
Which model this is
This page covers the YETI Rambler 42 oz Straw Mug with the press-fit Extra Large Straw Lid, not the newer 40-oz Rambler Travel Straw Mug with its threaded, leakproof flip lid. The two lid systems are not interchangeable. YETI also makes a 35-oz Large lid that is not the right fit for this mug.
