Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A 4.3-inch, 68 g button-only e-reader for people who carry DRM-free EPUB and TXT files and read in good light. Check your library and your lighting before you buy: there is no frontlight, no built-in store, and PDF and MOBI files have to be converted in XTEINK’s app or XT-Cloud first.

Strengths

  • Small enough to forget you are carrying it, at 68 g and 4.9 mm thick.
  • Physical buttons on both sides read well and can be remapped in community firmware.
  • Motion/shake page-turn works one-handed once you enable it from the reading menu.
  • The idle screen can show a quote, wallpaper or clock, and battery level.
  • The included 16GB card can be swapped for up to 256GB, and files live on it.
  • Wi-Fi transfer works through the device’s own hotspot at 192.168.3.3.

Weaknesses

  • No frontlight, so dim-light reading needs an external lamp.
  • Charging moved to a proprietary magnetic pogo-pin adapter, harder to replace than a plain USB-C cable.
  • PDF and MOBI files cannot be copied straight onto the card anymore.
  • Stock firmware has no highlighting, no built-in dictionary and no bookstore or third-party apps.
  • The 4.3-inch screen shows little per page turn and strains your eyes over long sessions.
  • Loading books through the app and converting files is fiddly, and some files need to be reformatted.

What this device is

The X4 Classic, sold as X4 V2, replaced the original X4, which XTEINK discontinued in September 2026. It is the button-only member of a three-model line. The X4 Pro adds a touchscreen, a frontlight and a 1100mAh battery; the X3 is a smaller 3.7-inch device at roughly 58 g with a 650mAh battery. Do not confuse this one with the original X4, the X3 or the China-only Android-based S4.

It is meant for short bursts: a commute, a secondary reader for one genre, or a travel device loaded with a queue of files.

Battery and charging

The 920mAh battery is rated by XTEINK at up to 10 days of casual reading, and no independent test of the X4 Classic has measured a runtime under a defined duty cycle. The original X4 was advertised at roughly 14 days, and the two figures come from different test conditions, so treat the 10-day claim as capacity rather than a promise.

Charging is the real change from the original X4. The original had USB-C, which some buyers chose it for; the X4 Classic uses a magnetic pogo-pin adapter that ships in the box but is harder to replace. Power the device for about 30 minutes before first use.

Getting books onto it

EPUB and TXT still transfer directly. PDF and MOBI have to be converted through the XTEINK official app or XT-Cloud first, and comic or image-heavy content is best converted to XTCH, XTC or XTCZ. Files sit on the microSD card, which must be exFAT or FAT32 or it will not be recognised. TXT files garble unless they are UTF-8.

New owners report freezes that may clear after 10–15 minutes on power and odd indexes that a rebuild through OK → Index fixes. Chapter navigation from the table of contents is hit-or-miss, and text styling such as indents, italics, bold and underlining is spotty at best, with images often not rendering inside books.

Reading in the dark and community firmware

There is no frontlight, so reading in dim light means adding a lamp. XTEINK sells a magnetic reading light, and readme.club’s editor says they would pick the X4 Pro over the X4 Classic today, mainly for the frontlight and tap-to-look-up on a word.

Community firmware exists for this exact model. CrossPoint lists the ESP32S3-based X4 Classic among supported devices and adds highlights and clippings, dictionary lookups, an OPDS browser, Calibre wireless connect, a file-transfer web UI, auto page turn and button remapping. XTEINK does not recommend it and excludes damage caused by unofficial firmware from warranty, though the change is reversible.

Firmware flashing has a hard edge. Third-party-store units, with AliExpress named, can ship with USB flashing locked, and flashing anything other than CrossPoint or CrossInk on a locked unit can permanently brick it. Units bought directly from xteink.com are not locked.

Is it worth it?

At $79.00 against a regular $109.00 (XTEINK store, November 2026) the device is well priced, but both colorways were marked sold out on that date and flash sales sell out in hours. The X4 Pro at $99 (XTEINK store, November 2026) is the better product if you read in low light, want tap-to-look-up, want native PDF and MOBI, or want a touchscreen.

For scale, Wirecutter puts an entry-level Kindle at $110 and a Kobo Clara at $140, and Android Police a basic Kindle at $150. The practical test is not the panel or the battery: it is whether your library is DRM-free EPUB and TXT and whether you read in good light. If either answer is no, the X4 Pro is the better buy. Optional extras from XTEINK run $8.99 for a magnetic case, $3.99 for a two-pack of matte screen protectors, $4.99 for a tempered glass protector and $9.99 for a reading light. XT-Cloud file transfer is free now, and XTEINK says paid features may come later.
