Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A rectangular-screen fitness band whose real upgrades over the standard Band 7 are built-in dual-band GPS and a larger 1.64-inch AMOLED display. Check the battery before you buy: Xiaomi’s 12-day claim is a lab figure, and independent tests measured 3-7 days with features on.

Strengths

  • Built-in dual-band GPS tracks phone-free runs without carrying a phone.
  • The 1.64-inch 326 PPI AMOLED is large, sharp and readable, with auto-brightness and an always-on mode.
  • At 20.5 g without the strap it is light enough for all-day and sleep wear.
  • Health readings are fast: heart rate and SpO2 take only a few seconds.
  • 110+ sports modes and 10 pre-loaded running courses cover most training.
  • No subscription is required for core tracking.

Weaknesses

  • Battery life falls well short of the 12-day claim: independent tests measured 3-7 days with features on.
  • GPS tracks are not smartphone-grade; one review unit routinely placed the wearer on the opposite side of the street.
  • The global version has no NFC, no Bluetooth calling and no notification replies.
  • The band works only with the Mi Fitness app, which reviewers and owners describe as needing work.
  • Software complaints on Reddit include buggy behavior, a stopwatch that miscounts and inconsistent notifications.
  • One owner reported a unit that would not charge even after cleaning the contacts and a factory reset.

Battery life and charging

Xiaomi’s 12-day figure comes from a lab “typical usage” mode that keeps most features off. GSMArena measured 7 days with all features except always-on display and three one-hour workouts a week, with GPS and health tracking alone burning 10-12% per hour. Android Authority measured about three days with always-on display, continuous heart rate, sleep and SpO2 monitoring and a daily GPS workout, about 10% per hour-long walk. An owner report in r/miband puts real-world use at 4-5 days. Plan on charging every 3-7 days.

Charging takes about 60 minutes over the proprietary 2-pin magnetic USB-A cable. First-time activation requires connecting the cable and pairing through the Mi Fitness app. The battery is not user-serviceable and no spare-parts information was found.

GPS and tracking accuracy

GPS is the headline feature and it generally works: GSMArena saw a 5-10 second outdoor lock, and Android Authority found GPS performs well for phone-free runs. The limit is precision. GSMArena’s unit routinely plotted the wearer on the opposite side of the street, and one Reddit owner calls the GPS “horrible”. Another owner had to set the app region to China to enable all features.

Heart rate and SpO2 readings are on par with other fitness trackers from the last year and by no means medical grade, per GSMArena. Sleep go-to-sleep and wake times were accurate in GSMArena’s test, while Android Authority calls its sleep tracking inconsistent. One owner reports the screen is less bright than the Band 7’s, though larger; Xiaomi’s spec is up to 500 nits.

App, notifications and missing features

The band is locked to the Mi Fitness app. Android Authority says the app needs work and a Reddit owner calls it crappy. Zepp Life does not support the 7 Pro, though data can be transferred from it.

Notifications are a weak spot. GSMArena saw inconsistent sync that sometimes needed a manual re-sync, and notification delays when the phone is locked. Owners on Reddit report very buggy software, missing features and a stopwatch that does not count correctly. Xiaomi’s own FAQ documents slow sync, iOS pairing and Bluetooth conflicts as common enough to fix by firmware update.

The global version omits NFC contactless payments, which are China-version only, and there is no Bluetooth calling, which competitors at this price offer. PAI and the find-band function are not supported at all. Incoming calls can be rejected or muted on the band but not answered. Pre-installed apps like Cycles and Alexa cannot be removed from the app screen.

Is it worth it?

There are no running costs: no subscription is required for core tracking, and the only extras are spare straps. The band launched globally at 99 EUR (about US$98) in October 2022, and GSMArena saw it at 100 EUR / 120 GBP at review. Android Authority’s 2023 review quoted a $119.99 MSRP and judged it overpriced against the standard Band 7 and cheap smartwatches. Gizchina listed it from $79.99 in its deal coverage.

Under $70 it is strong value for GPS plus AMOLED plus 5 ATM from a reputable seller. From $71-90 it is fair to good, with the 3-7 day battery and no NFC as the trade-offs. From $91-120 the case weakens, which is where GSMArena’s priced-too-high verdict landed. Above $120 it is weak, with the 8, 9 and 10 Pro lines and established trackers at or below that level.

Which model this is

This page covers the Xiaomi Smart Band 7 Pro (Mi Band 7 Pro in China), the rectangular-screen “Pro” variant of Xiaomi’s 2022 band lineup. The global edition launched in October 2022 at 99 EUR (about US$98) and carries no NFC; the China edition launched in July 2022 at about CNY 400 (about US$60) and does. Xiaomi does not officially sell this model in North America, so US stock is third-party marketplace or import.

Do not confuse it with the standard Smart Band 7, which has a 1.62-inch screen, no GNSS and a 180 mAh battery, or with the later 8, 9 and 10 Pro models.
