Summary

A wired-only 2K video doorbell with an onboard microSD slot for 24/7 local recording and an included chime controller for an existing mechanical chime. Check your wiring and Wi-Fi before you buy: it needs a 16–24 V AC, 10 VA-plus chime circuit, and owners widely report recurring offline drops.

Strengths

  • Local 24/7 recording to microSD up to 256 GB with no subscription.
  • Supports an existing mechanical chime through the included controller, unique among Wyze doorbells.
  • Sharp 2K sensor with color night vision and a wide 166.8° diagonal field of view.
  • Ring alerts are fast; Consumer Reports measured a 3.4-second average alert response.
  • Deep Alexa and Google integration, including Echo shows and chimes.

Weaknesses

  • Wired-only with no battery option; it needs a working 16–24 V AC chime circuit.
  • Recurring owner reports of daily or every-other-day offline drops needing reconnects or power cycles.
  • The microSD slot sits behind a flap on the door where anyone can eject the card.
  • Daytime video is soft per Consumer Reports, and the 20/15 fps frame rates cause motion clipping.
  • The original Wyze Chime does not work with the v2, and the controller must be installed or the warranty may be void.
  • No Apple HomeKit, and smart detections plus longer recordings need a Cam Plus plan.

Local storage, the chime and the wiring

The v2’s reason to exist is the combination of an onboard microSD slot and mechanical-chime support, which no other Wyze doorbell offers. The slot takes cards up to 256 GB in FAT32 and records continuously without a subscription, and a forum user reported the unit kept recording to the card even while it was off Wi-Fi. The included chime controller is mandatory in practice: the quick-start guide says it must be installed before use and that skipping it may void the warranty. Houses with more than one chime can lose distinct ding patterns with the controller, and one owner needed a new 16V-30VA transformer to make the controller and mechanical chime work together. Wyze’s own pages disagree on whether the existing chime must actually be functional.

Wi-Fi, app and streaming

The dominant owner complaint is stability. Threads from late 2024 into 2026 describe the doorbell going offline daily or every other day, taking about 20 minutes to reconnect and sometimes needing a power cycle, with router workarounds like forcing WPA2-PSK[AES], disabling unscheduled automatic power save and disabling 802.11r. The free tier gives 12-second clips on every button press with up to 14 days of cloud storage; smart detections, the voice prompt, back-to-back recordings and Web View need Cam Plus. Tom’s Guide could not find a toggle for the advertised pre-roll, and the 3-6 second pre-roll depends on the unit being wired.

Warranty and running costs

Wyze’s warranty is one year from an authorized retailer, one year from wyze.com for purchases before 2026-01-01 and 18 months from wyze.com for purchases on or after 2026-01-01; refurbished units get one year. Returns run 30 days. The microSD card is the main running cost: a Wyze 32 GB card lists at $18.98, and larger cards are widely available. Cam Plus is $2.99 a month per camera after a 30-day trial, and the annual plan rises to $29.99 a year for US customers from March 2026; Cam Unlimited is $9.99 a month or $99 a year. Accessories include a wedge kit at $8.99 and a standalone chime controller at $17.98.

Tests and image quality

Independent testing is mixed but usable. PCMag found sharp daylight video but poor low light, including a shadowed face on a cloudy afternoon. Consumer Reports ranked it 4 of 62 doorbells, calling daytime video soft and nighttime video very good, with a 3.4-second average alert response, very good data security and sub-standard data privacy. Tom’s Guide called it the best cheap video doorbell while flagging motion clipping and a confusing pre-roll. No dedicated RTINGS or Wirecutter test of the v2 was found.

Is it worth it?

At the $39.99 launch price, still the figure on Wyze’s own comparison chart, the v2 was one of the strongest values in wired doorbells. At today’s $59.98 across Wyze, Walmart and Home Depot, it is fair rather than a steal: you are paying about 50% over launch for the same hardware. Wyze’s own Battery Video Doorbell at $65.98 removes the chime-controller and wiring problems but drops local recording and resolution, and sub-$50 models like the Arlo Video Doorbell 2nd Gen exist without local storage. Buy the v2 only if 24/7 microSD recording and existing-chime support are the deciding features, ideally at $50 or less or in a card bundle.

Which model this is

This page covers the Wyze Video Doorbell v2, model WVDWDV2, black, the wired-only doorbell with an onboard microSD slot. It is not the original Wyze Video Doorbell v1, the Wyze Video Doorbell Pro, the Duo Cam Doorbell or the 2025 Wyze Battery Video Doorbell.
