Wyze Cam OG: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-19

Summary

The Cam OG is a wired 1080p security camera with a 40-lumen spotlight, colour night vision and IP65 weather resistance that records locally to a microSD card of up to 256 GB. The two cost surprises are the Outdoor Power Adapter v2 needed for outdoor use and the Cam Plus subscription that gates AI detection, 14-day event history and unlimited clips. Hardware trouble is real but not common: Wi-Fi dropouts that a router restart usually fixes, one documented camera that died at about 18 months, and a silent 2025 hardware revision that changed the body size and the field of view. At $29.98 from Wyze (Oct 2026) it is good value, and at $20 or less it is strong value.

Parts and consumables

Yearly running cost

The only recurring cost is the Cam Plus subscription: $1.99 per camera per month, or $9.99 per month for up to 99 cameras (PCMag, April 2023); 9to5Toys quoted $2 per camera per month or $12 per month for the unlimited plan in February 2023. A year for one camera is the monthly figure times twelve, and a year on the multi-camera plan is $9.99 times twelve. Everything else is a one-off purchase: the microSD card, the Outdoor Power Adapter and the Stack Kit. There is no battery to replace and no local storage without a card. [1][2][4][3]

When it is a good buy

Wyze’s own store listed the single camera at $29.98 and a 3-pack at $59.96 (Oct 2026), Consumer Reports listed it from $29.97, and Micro Center listed the black WYZECGSB at $29.99 with in-store pickup only; 9to5Toys found it at $20 from Wyze in February 2023, and PCMag’s April 2023 review put the MSRP at $23.99 with a 2-pack at $45.98. At $20 or less it is strong value; $21–30 is good value and the normal street level; $31–40 is fair once the adapter and card push the real outdoor cost toward $55–60; above $40 the 1080p-only sensor, 2.4 GHz-only Wi-Fi, missing HomeKit and paywalled detection are hard to justify. For low-light detail the Wyze Cam v3 is the better camera, because two independent sources found the OG’s night performance worse. For a sharper image at a similar total cost, the Wyze Cam v3 Pro and Cam v4 are 2K models. For a second view of the same spot, the Wyze Cam OG Telephoto 3x stacks with the OG and gives a picture-in-picture view, but it carries no spotlight and has a narrower lens. [2][11][1][4][14]
