Summary

A wedge-style two-channel dash cam with a front 2K 1440p 60fps camera, a rear 1080p 30fps camera, GPS in the mount and a supercapacitor instead of a battery. Check the parking mode before you buy: buffered parking was removed from this model in January 2021 because it was unreliable, so only time-lapse and low-bitrate parking recording remain.

Strengths

  • Front 2K 1440p at 60fps covers the road ahead at a 27.4 Mbps average bitrate.
  • DashCamTalk scored day video 9/10 and night 7/10 and called it a recommended buy at launch.
  • GPS logs speed, route and location from the adhesive mount.
  • Supercapacitor power instead of a battery, plus a discreet 84 x 55 x 40 mm front body.
  • VIOFO sells spare mounts, cables and cameras, and sent one owner a free rear cable and camera after a fault at 16 months.
  • Warranty is 18 months, or 24 with registration.

Weaknesses

  • Buffered parking mode was removed from this model in January 2021 and remains absent.
  • Wi-Fi is 2.4GHz only; 5GHz is reserved for the A129 Pro line.
  • microSD tops out at 256GB (FAT32), and 1440p60 cannot be combined with HDR.
  • The rear camera and cable are specific to the A129 Plus and do not fit other A129 models.
  • VIOFO has discontinued the model on its own site, so long-term firmware support is uncertain.
  • Owners report rear camera and cable faults, parking-mode power behavior, and heat concerns.

What the parking mode actually does

Buffered parking mode, which records the seconds before an impact, is not on this model. VIOFO removed it from the A129 Plus and A129 Plus Duo in January 2021 due to reliability issues, and BlackboxMyCar states plainly that the A129 Plus does not support buffered parking mode. DashCamTalk’s own testing found the camera could stop recording or crash in that mode. What remains is time-lapse recording at 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10fps without audio and low-bitrate recording at about 4Mbps with audio, and both require a hardwire kit. Any listing that advertises buffered parking mode for this model is stale.

Video quality and features

The front sensor is a 5MP Sony STARVIS IMX335 behind an F1.6 lens with a 140° field of view; the rear is a 2MP Sony STARVIS IMX307 with a 160° field of view. DashCamTalk called the front day video very good and the night video good, and rated the rear as one of the better 1080p rear cameras with above-average night performance. H.265 is a hidden mode rather than a menu option, enabled by stopping recording and long-pressing the MIC button for 4 seconds. The app scores 4.9/10 on DashCamTalk, which rates the iOS app below Android.

Owner reports, upkeep and repairability

Owner feedback is generally positive on video quality, with recurring caution signals. An r/VIOFO thread describes rear-camera trouble met with advice to update firmware or swap the SD card, and a DashCamTalk owner reported a faulty rear cable at 16 months that VIOFO replaced free. An r/Dashcam owner reported the camera would not turn off when the ignition was off with parking mode enabled.

Upkeep is simple: use a high-endurance microSD card, format it FAT32, and update front and rear firmware separately by SD card. VIOFO sells spare rear mounts, adhesive pads, GPS modules, rear cameras and cables. Out-of-warranty replacements carry a $30-50 fee with the old body returned. There is no long-term failure-rate data for this model.

Is it worth it?

BlackboxMyCar lists the A129 Plus Duo at $169.99, marked down from $179.99, while VIOFO’s own listing shows $199.99 marked Discontinued. At $170 or less it is the budget dual-cam entry in VIOFO’s lineup, with strong day video and acceptable night video. Above about $200 the case weakens, and the successor A229 Plus 2CH lists at $209.99 from BlackboxMyCar and $229.99 from VIOFO, adding STARVIS 2 sensors, HDR on both channels, 5GHz Wi-Fi and voice control. Recurring costs include a high-endurance microSD card ($40-85), a hardwire kit ($17.99) or an OBD-II cable ($59.99) for parking mode, and a CPL filter ($14.99). There is no subscription or cloud fee.

Which model this is

This page covers the VIOFO A129 Plus Duo, the two-channel dash cam released in September 2020. Do not merge it with the original A129 Duo (1080p front and rear, IMX291 sensors, 2018), the A129 Pro Duo (4K front, IMX317 sensor) or the A129 Plus Duo IR (front plus interior camera for rideshare). The front camera is not compatible with the rear camera and cables of the other A129 models. The US listing on Amazon is ASIN B09RC4CXYR.
