VIOFO A129 Plus Duo: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-16

Summary

The A129 Plus Duo records 2K 1440p at 60fps in front and 1080p at 30fps in back, logs GPS from the mount and runs on a supercapacitor with no subscription, but the parking mode is where owners and reviewers run into trouble. VIOFO pulled buffered parking off this model in January 2021 because the camera stopped recording or crashed in that mode, leaving only time-lapse and low-bitrate parking recording, and owners also report rear camera and cable faults, the unit staying awake after ignition-off, and SD-card errors. It is worth buying at $170 or less from a retailer that still stocks it; past $200 the newer A229 Plus 2CH is the better target.

Parts and consumables

Yearly running cost

No subscription and no cloud fee, because the camera records straight to the microSD card. The only recurring spend is the high-endurance microSD card at $40-85 (BlackboxMyCar, October 2026), and the parking-mode hardware is a one-off at $17.99 for the hardwire kit or $59.99 for the OBD-II cable (BlackboxMyCar, October 2026). No source gives a card replacement interval, so a yearly figure cannot be computed. Not enough data.

When it is a good buy

At $169.99 (BlackboxMyCar, October 2026, marked down from $179.99) the A129 Plus Duo is the budget dual-cam entry in VIOFO’s line and a reasonable buy for front-plus-rear coverage, GPS logging and app playback without paying for 4K. VIOFO’s own store shows $199.99 (October 2026), but that listing is marked Discontinued, so treat it as a dead price rather than a live one, and above about $200 the case for a retired model weakens. The successor A229 Plus 2CH lists at $209.99 (BlackboxMyCar) and $229.99 (VIOFO), both October 2026, and adds STARVIS 2 sensors, HDR on both channels, 5GHz Wi-Fi and voice control. [1][3][13]
