Summary

A dual-channel dash cam that pairs a 4K front camera with a 1080p rear, built on a Sony IMX317 front sensor with GPS, dual-band Wi-Fi and a supercapacitor. Check availability before you buy: VIOFO’s own store listed it sold out in September 2026 and the A149 Pro Duo replaced it in the lineup.

Strengths

  • A 50 Mbps maximum bitrate, roughly double the 25 Mbps of the two rivals it was tested against.
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi, GPS in the mount and a supercapacitor instead of a battery.
  • Three parking modes when paired with the separately sold hardwire kit.
  • Tech Advisor named it Editors’ Choice in January 2020.
  • A long-term owner ran one for 2.5 years with both cameras still in focus after a card swap.

Weaknesses

  • The rear camera is 1080p, not 4K.
  • Night plate capture is inconsistent; Tech Advisor found most plates illegible away from lit junctions.
  • Owners report Wi-Fi failures, including a faulty module batch VIOFO replaced by RMA.
  • Scattered owners report units that stopped working, and one malfunctioned after 21 days.
  • TechRadar criticized scratchy plastics, thick cables and a clunky app.
  • The model is sold out and superseded, so at full price it is the wrong buy.

Video quality and the rear channel

The 4K front camera is the reason to buy this camera. TechRadar in January 2023 found 4K plates and road signs easy to identify, and Tech Advisor gave it Editors’ Choice in 2020 with rear footage it called better than most. Vortex Radar measured a 50 Mbps maximum bitrate, roughly double the 25 Mbps of the BlackVue DR900S-2CH and Thinkware U1000 it was compared against.

Wi-Fi failures and dead units

Owner reports cluster on Wi-Fi. In one r/Dashcam thread VIOFO support told an owner the batch had faulty wifi modules and issued an RMA with shipping refunded up to $20. Scattered owners describe units that simply stopped working, including one returned as defective after 21 days and another that stayed broken after firmware v2.91 and fresh SD cards. Nobody has published a failure rate, so treat these as caution signals rather than a known defect rate.

SD cards, parking mode and running costs

No microSD card ships in the box, and the two channels fill cards quickly at 4K. VIOFO recommends high-endurance UHS-I U1/U3 cards with 128GB preferable, and its own 64GB industrial-grade card lists at $39.99. All three parking modes need the separately sold HK3 ACC hardwire kit, listed at $25.99 on VIOFO’s store. Optional extras include a CPL filter at about $13.49 and a Bluetooth remote at about $17.99.

Is it worth it?

The model sat between $200 and $250 through 2023, reaching a $229.99 sale price on VIOFO’s global store before it sold out in September 2026. At $200 or less the 4K front detail is easy to justify; above that, the A149 Pro Duo that replaced it adds a newer STARVIS 2 front sensor, HDR on both channels and faster Wi-Fi. Buy it on clearance or used, and weigh the seller’s return policy, because the Wi-Fi and dead-unit reports make a good return window matter at any price.

Which model this is

This page covers the VIOFO A129 Pro Duo, the dual-channel 4K-front camera launched in October 2019 and VIOFO’s first 4K dual-channel dash cam. Don’t confuse it with the 1080p A129 Duo, the single-channel A129 Pro, the 2K A129 Plus Duo or the IR interior variants. The Amazon listing is ASIN B07YZPSP7Y.
