Summary

A one-gallon warm-mist humidifier that boils water into steam for rooms of about 250–400 sq ft, with no wick or filter to buy. Check your household before you buy: the water stays hot, so it is not a home where children or pets can knock it over.

Strengths

  • No wick, pad or replaceable filter to buy; the heater evaporates water instead of atomizing it.
  • The gallon tank runs most of a night on low; the lab table records about 22.1 hours.
  • Two heat levels and a simple Off/Hi/Low switch; no app or account needed.
  • The medicine cup and VapoPads let you add scent or VapoSteam if you want it.
  • Three removable parts go in the dishwasher.

Weaknesses

  • The water stays hot; the manual, the EPA and one hands-on review all warn against using it where a child or pet can knock it over.
  • Scale builds up on the heater and kills output; TechGearLab scored ease of cleaning 3.0/10.
  • No humidistat: nothing stops the room from drifting past 60% relative humidity unless you watch it.
  • The nightlight is on whenever the unit runs, with no documented way to turn it off.
  • The boiling gurgle measured 46.9 dB; there is no silent mode.
  • The warranty terms contradict themselves in the current manual.

Output and humidity

TechGearLab’s test room started at 40% relative humidity; the V745 added 10.9 points in 30 minutes and 16.5 in an hour, among the stronger units in its comparison. The manufacturer rates the room at 250–400 sq ft, but that depends on air exchange, temperature and starting humidity — there is no sensor holding a target. The manual tells you to lower the output or open a door if humidity passes 60% or condensation appears; the EPA’s guidance is not to exceed 50%. In a small sealed bedroom, a cheap hygrometer and manual intervention are part of ownership.

Cleaning, scale and upkeep

The tank fills from the bottom: remove it, flip it, unscrew the cap, fill with cool tap water, reinstall. Rinse daily, and descale and disinfect weekly; hard water means more often. The manual’s descaling soak uses about a cup of white vinegar for 20 minutes, and disinfecting uses one teaspoon of bleach per gallon of water for 20 minutes — never mix the two, with full rinsing between. Only the medicine cup, water tray and mist chimney go in the dishwasher, on the top rack under 70°C (158°F) without detergent. The manual warns that poor maintenance can void the warranty.

Safety and hot water

The heater boils water, and the manual warns that steam and spilled water can cause burns; it forbids placement within children’s or pets’ reach and requires a stable waterproof base 12 inches from walls and four feet from beds. The EPA independently cautions against steam vaporizers within children’s reach. When the boiling reservoir runs dry, the heater stops and the red reset light comes on; a normal restart means switching off, unplugging, cooling for at least 15 minutes, refilling and reseating the tank. A February 2025 r/Humidifiers report describes a V745A that leaked water when the tank ran dry and the auto-shutoff triggered, with no visible crack found — one owner’s experience, not a pattern. Do not open the housing or bypass the cooling-chimney interlock; electrical or heater faults go through Vicks service.

Running costs and consumables

There is no filter to buy. The optional scents are the real recurring cost: Vicks Soothing Menthol VapoPads are $10.19 for a 12-pack at Target, about $0.85 a pad, each lasting up to eight hours — a pad every night works out to roughly $310 a year. VapoSteam is $10.19 for 8 fl oz at Target; one tablespoon in the medicine cup per use is about $0.64. Electricity is an estimate, not a meter reading: TechGearLab’s operating-cost model puts it at $71.05 a year, and an assumed 250 W draw over 8 hours a day for 180 days would be 360 kWh, about $90 at $0.25/kWh. Weekly descaling with a cup of vinegar works out to about 13 quarts a year.

Is it worth it?

Under $30 new delivered it would be an attractive price for an adult-only home; $30–40 is defensible on the lab-proven output alone. Above $45, compare the Vicks VWM845 at $39.49 at Target or the Levoit Dual 150 at $43.99 direct, which adds a 2-year warranty and cool mist but raised humidity 7 points in the same lab test against the V745’s 16.5. The Vicks V150SG 1.5-gallon vaporizer is $19.79 at Target, a different design with the same hot-water cautions.

Which model this is

This page covers the Vicks V745 series warm-mist humidifier, sold as the V745 and, on older packaging and retailer records, the V745A or V745A/V745-JUV. Do not confuse it with the newer Vicks VWM845 Warm Moisture Humidifier or the V150SG 1.5-gallon vaporizer, which are different designs.
