Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A small external vacuum sealer from VacMaster: dual piston pump, 12-inch seal bar, Dry, Gentle and Moist modes, a built-in bag cutter, roll storage and a hose for VacMaster canisters and mason jars, in a 17-inch box that weighs 4.35 lb. Before you buy, know that nobody has measured this machine yet — no independent test, no owner history, and no seal times from the manufacturer itself.

Strengths

  • Dual piston pump and a 12-inch bar in a machine that is 17 inches long and weighs 4.35 lb.
  • Dry, Gentle and Moist modes, with the machine described as handling wet and dry foods such as meats.
  • Integrated bag cutter and built-in roll storage, so no separate knife is needed.
  • Vacuum hose in the box, so the same pump can pull down VacMaster canisters and mason jars.
  • Sold direct by the brand at $89.00, with no premium for the name (VacMaster, 2026).

Weaknesses

  • No independent test of this exact model was found, and nobody has published a vacuum level, a seal time or a leak test for it.
  • VacMaster’s own Seal Times & Recommended Settings guide has no Sidekick entry, and its buyer roadmap leaves the model out of every tier, including the entry-level Home Cooks & Hobbyists line of VP95, VP210 and VP215.
  • The manufacturer’s own product page shows no customer reviews, so the dual piston pump, the cutter and the Gentle and Moist modes have no field history.
  • The warranty excludes Teflon tape, lid gaskets and seal wire, so a worn seal bar is your bill.
  • Returns require the unit unused and unopened in its original packaging within 30 days, with return shipping paid by you. Open the box to try it and the return is gone.

What the specs do not tell you

VacMaster documents this machine better than most new kitchen appliances. The product page carries a full specification table and links a VPSK user manual and a spec sheet PDF. All of it is first-party, and the spec sheet PDF could not be opened, so everything below comes from the product page itself.

Two claims need reading carefully. “Dual piston pump” describes the design, not a result, and the brand publishes no vacuum level in mbar or inHg for it. The freshness claim of “up to 5x longer than traditional storage” has no baseline and no test method behind it, so treat it as marketing copy rather than a shelf-life figure. Nobody has established how long any of the three modes takes to seal a bag, or whether Gentle is a cooler circuit or simply a timed limit on the same heating element.

The gaps are plain: rated wattage, housing and chamber material, cord length, country of manufacture, maximum bag width, and whether the 12-inch bar is the full usable sealing length or a nominal figure. If you need the pump to pull a mason jar down to a hard vacuum, you are buying that blind too — the hose is confirmed, the flow rate is not.

Bags, canisters and running costs

Bags and rolls are the repeat cost of any sealer, and none are listed as included. VacMaster sells standard, mesh, zipper and Temp Plus bags and rolls, and the Sidekick is documented as compatible with the mesh and embossed ones. Canisters are optional and the machine works as a bag sealer without them: VacMaster offers the machine alone, with a small canister, or as a three-piece set of 16.91, 27.05 and 44 oz canisters.

The seal bar is where the running cost bites. Maintenance is undocumented too — no cleaning schedule, no bag-change interval and no service points on the product page, and the linked user manual could not be opened. The pump is not described as oil-lubricated anywhere, though the brand sells vacuum pump oil for its chamber machines. Electricity is a rounding error against the food, except that with no wattage published you cannot work out even that.

Warranty and returns

VacMaster is the brand of ARY, Inc., and ARY extends a limited one-year warranty from receipt of the goods, covering defects in material and workmanship. The remedy is repair, replacement, a refund or a reasonable allowance at ARY’s option, and consequential damages are excluded. A claim must be made in writing within one year of receipt or it is waived, and ARY’s liability is capped at the purchase price.

Two clauses matter more than the headline. The warranty is void for repairs by anyone other than ARY without authorization, and for goods tampered with or altered by anyone else, so replacing the seal tape yourself can fall inside that exclusion — get authorization before you open the unit. And Teflon tape, lid gaskets and seal wire are excluded outright, even though they are the parts that wear out first.

Returns are separate and tighter. Regularly stocked items come back unused and unopened, in the original packaging, within 30 days of receipt, with return shipping at your cost, an RMA by email and the refund after inspection. Open the box to try the machine and you have effectively given up the return.

Is it worth it?

Here is the honest version: you are buying a manufacturer’s spec sheet. VacMaster’s own store lists the machine at $89.00, the machine with a small canister at $103.45, and the three-piece canister set at $137.10 (VacMaster, 2026). At or below $75 the documented feature set is a good deal on paper. At $89 direct, that is a fair buy for someone who wants the small footprint, the dual pump, three modes, the built-in cutter and the canister hose, and who is comfortable being an early adopter on an untested machine. Between $91 and $110 the real question is whether you want the $103.45 bundle rather than the machine alone. Above $111 the value is weak, and at $137.10 you are buying a canister set rather than a better sealer.

Do not expect to find it on a shelf. VacMaster sells it direct, and no other retailer listing turned up; Target and Walmart carry brand pages for VacMaster, but neither shows a Sidekick.

The thing to weigh is not the money. Every performance claim available for this machine today comes from the manufacturer, and even the manufacturer has not published how long it takes to seal a bag. If you want measured performance and an owner record, wait for this model to accumulate reviews, or buy a compact sealer that already has both. If you want a small dual-pump sealer with a cutter and a canister hose, and you can live without published numbers, this one hangs together on paper.

Which model this is

This page covers the VacMaster Sidekick Compact Vacuum Sealer with Dual Piston Pump, manufacturer SKU VPSK. It is an edge sealer: the bag goes under the bar and the pump pulls the air out through the lid. The closest thing to it in the brand’s own catalog is the BS116 Table Top Impulse Heat Sealer in the bag-sealers line.

The brand writes the name both as “Sidekick” and as “SideKick” across the same pages. Both mean the same machine, and no revision number or date code is published for it.

The marketplace listing for this machine is ASIN B0GQC13CXL. That identifier could not be traced back to a manufacturer page, so treat the link between the listing and this exact configuration as unconfirmed.
