Summary
UE’s largest portable Bluetooth speaker, built for parties: 100 dBC of volume, a measured 23-hour battery, an optical input for your TV and PartyUp pairing with other UE speakers. Check the battery before you buy — it is not user-replaceable and owners report degradation within months.
Strengths
- Measured 23-hour battery life covers a full weekend of parties.
- 100 dBC fills a backyard without much compression, and adaptive EQ tunes itself to the room.
- The optical input is rare in a portable speaker and makes TV connection easy.
- PartyUp links it with other UE speakers; two Hyperbooms in stereo “sound VERY good” per owners.
- IPX4 shrugs off rain and pool splashes in owner use.
- UE still ships firmware updates; app v7.21.174 (Nov 2025) added Remote Activation Mode.
Weaknesses
- The battery is not user-replaceable, and one owner reports it “becomes trash pretty quickly” within 6 months of regular use.
- At 13 lb it is portable in name only for long carries.
- IPX4 is splashproof only — no dust, drop or submersion protection like the IP67 MEGABOOM 3.
- No Wi-Fi, voice assistant or speakerphone at this price.
- The center pin on the proprietary DC charger is a known breakage point, and the speaker cannot charge from a USB-C power bank.
- RTINGS notes limited low-bass extension; Consumer Reports calls the bass somewhat boomy.

Sound quality
RTINGS rates the music performance very good: generally balanced with a slight low-mid boost and treble lift, remarkable loudness without much compression, though it doesn’t produce much low-bass. CNET hears big sound with strong bass and good detail; The Verge called it a “desert island Bluetooth speaker” with near-360-degree delivery. Consumer Reports is cooler — bass somewhat boomy, midrange slightly grainy, treble prominent and smeared.
Battery and charging
UE claims up to 24 hours at moderate volume; RTINGS measured 23. CNET measured about 3 hours at max volume, so volume is the controlling variable. Charging takes about 2.6 hours with the included 90 W supply — the speaker will not charge from a USB-C PD power bank, and with a dead battery it shows “Charging, please wait” and shuts off rather than running on cable power.
The long-term question is the battery. Logitech confirmed via Best Buy Q&A that the Hyperboom battery cannot be replaced, and a Reddit owner reports battery life “becomes trash pretty quickly” within 6 months of regular use. Nobody has published a degradation curve, so treat this as a known risk rather than a measured defect. Two owners on PissedConsumer report random shutoffs after a year of use. Third-party repair exists (Acme Revival), but there is no official parts catalog.
Inputs, app and PartyUp
Four simultaneous inputs — two Bluetooth devices, 3.5 mm aux and optical — let you run a TV and two phones at once, and the USB-A port tops up a phone. The BOOM app adds adaptive EQ room correction, a 5-band graphic EQ, presets and one-touch playlist shortcuts for Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music and Deezer. PartyUp pairs the Hyperboom with other UE speakers; one owner reports occasional Bluetooth cutouts when two Hyperbooms run in stereo or on aux-in.
Is it worth it?
There are no subscriptions and no consumables; the only running cost is electricity, and the real long-term risk is the battery, since no official battery-only replacement program exists. UE direct still lists the speaker at $399.99 (October 2026), the same MSRP as at its February 2020 launch. The first-party storefront ultimateearsstore.com lists it at $239.99, UE Renewed at $279.99 with a 1-year warranty, and the same refurbished unit at $167.99. Owners on Reddit call $400 overpriced and put fair value at $150–200.
At $239.99 from the first-party storefront it is a strong buy for a loud, all-day party speaker with an optical input and multi-speaker pairing. At $279.99–$399.99 it is a premium-priced large portable with proven sound, and the JBL Boombox 3 offers deeper bass and longer battery at a similar price. At $167.99 renewed it is compelling if a 1-year warranty is acceptable. Buy it for the UE ecosystem, the optical input and PartyUp; skip it if you want low-end depth, a voice assistant or a battery you can swap yourself.
