Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

The Traeger Pro Series 22 is Traeger’s entry full-size pellet grill: 572 sq in of two-tier cooking space, an 18 lb hopper and a simple digital controller, with no WiFIRE app control. Check the controller before you buy, because the older board swings 20–30°F and Traeger warns of an over-firing fire risk on long cooks.

Strengths

  • 572 sq in of cooking space across two porcelain-coated grates.
  • The Digital Pro controller sets temperature in 25-degree steps and is easy to use.
  • Owners report steady low-and-slow results with little babysitting.
  • Smoke flavor and “set it and forget it” ease come up in owner reports.
  • A 7-year warranty covers defects in material and workmanship.
  • Traeger publishes a catalog of replacement parts for this model.

Weaknesses

  • The older controller swings 20–30°F around the set point, and one owner reported the temperature not matching the setting.
  • Traeger warns of an “over-firing” fire hazard during long cooks, when unburned pellets build up in the firepot.
  • A Pro 22 owner reported fire loss and “LER” errors, where the grill drops below 125°F for 10+ minutes.
  • Noisy auger, fan and hopper operation.
  • High-heat searing is weak next to gas or charcoal, which is normal for a pellet grill.
  • No WiFIRE app control, no Super Smoke mode and no pellet sensor.

How it cooks

The Pro 22 is a full-size pellet smoker and grill. Pellets feed a firepot while a fan circulates heat and smoke, and you set a target temperature rather than managing a fire. The two-tier grate setup gives 572 sq in total: a 418 sq in main grate and a 154 sq in upper rack. The 18 lb hopper holds a bag of pellets, and the Digital Pro controller holds the temperature in 25-degree steps with Advanced Grilling Logic. Max output is 450°F. It runs on 120 V AC and draws 250 W through an included 6 ft cord.

One meat probe is included; grills built before May 2022 shipped with two. There is no WiFIRE connectivity, no Super Smoke mode and no pellet sensor, so this is a dial-and-walk-away grill rather than an app-controlled one.

Temperature control and the older controller

This is the part to check before buying. bbqgrillfit.com reports swings of 20–30°F around the set point and a 10–15 minute warm-up. One r/Traeger owner reported the temperature not matching the setting.

Traeger’s own support page lists the common causes of swings: pellet quality and sawdust, poor air circulation, opening the lid, incorrect startup or shutdown, foil drip liners, and part failure. It says part failure is the rarest cause. A Pro 22 owner on the Traeger Owners Forum reported fire loss and “LER” errors, where the grill drops below 125°F for 10+ minutes; listed causes include an empty or overfull firepot, RTD sensor problems, poor pellet quality, wind and the P-setting.

No independent instrumented test of this exact Gen 1 model has been published, so treat the controller swings as a known limitation rather than a defect.

Pellets, running costs and fire safety

Pellets burn at roughly 1-3 lb per hour depending on set temperature, and a typical bag runs about $1 per lb. bbqgrillfit.com measured 10–15 hours of hopper runtime at smoking temperatures. At those rates a long cook is not free, so budget for pellets as fuel.

Traeger warns about “over-firing”, a build-up of unburned pellets in the firepot that can become a combustion or fire hazard during long cooks. Keep 18 in of clearance from combustibles, manage the grease bucket, and clean the firepot and ash regularly. BBQSource recommends a shop vac for firepot cleaning and estimates 5–8 years of service with proper maintenance; a suitable vac costs about $30.

Warranty, parts and upkeep

Traeger’s official FAQ states a 7-year warranty on defects in material and workmanship. One third-party review says three years, so count on the seven from Traeger’s own page. Direct orders from Traeger have a 45-day return policy; dealer policies vary.

Replacement parts are published and sold by Traeger for this model: auger assembly, auger motor, firepot assembly, hot rod, RTD probe, controller, grates, heat baffle, hopper parts, legs, lid and power cord. Keeping the firepot and ash cleaned out and the grease bucket managed is the routine maintenance the manual and support pages require.

Is it worth it?

Traeger’s US MSRP for the Bronze is $549.99, and a third-party aggregator showed $497 against a $599 reference (price last checked May 1, 2026). smokeandpellets.com put it around $499 in February 2024, and Traeger Canada lists the Blue Gen 1 at $699.99 CAD.

At the $549.99 US price the Pro 22 is a reasonable entry full-size pellet grill for buyers who want the Traeger name, 572 sq in and simple controls. Below about $450 it is strong value for the capacity. Above about $600-650, competing pellet grills with WiFIRE or more cooking area become attractive. The trade-offs are the older controller’s swings and the lack of smart features, against steady low-and-slow results and the 7-year warranty.

Which model this is

This page covers the Pro Series 22 (Gen 1) in Bronze, the non-WiFIRE 22-inch model in model numbers TFB57PZB and TFB57PZBO. Its US Amazon listing is ASIN B07GLK1NC2. Do not merge it with the WiFIRE-equipped Pro 575, the Pro 34 (884 sq in), the Ironwood, or the newer Woodridge Pro.
