Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

Check the 500 F searing limit and the single-wall cold-weather performance before you buy, because both will cost you at the grill.

Strengths

  • Set-and-forget low-and-slow cooking for ribs, pork butt and brisket with minimal attention.
  • The WiFIRE app is the most-praised feature, especially for overnight cooks.
  • Steel body and a brushless DC auger motor give it a burly, durable feel.
  • Hopper clean-out makes switching pellet flavors easy.
  • Easy assembly (about 30-60 minutes with two people) and simple cleaning.
  • Burgers and chicken come out better than on a gas grill, with no flare-ups.

Weaknesses

  • Searing is weak at the 500 F maximum; every independent test finishes steaks in a cast-iron pan.
  • Smoke flavor is mild by design, so owners who want more add smoke tubes with wood chips.
  • The included pit probe reads 15-20 F off in verified owner tests; bring a separate thermometer.
  • Single-wall construction loses temperature stability below about 40 F ambient, and direct sun can add about 35 F.
  • WiFIRE works only on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, which can mean reconfiguring your router.
  • Owner forums and Reddit show recurring controller and auger failures, including one controller that died 34 days past the 3-year warranty.

Low-and-slow cooking and the app

Consumer Reports tested the Pro 575 and rated it very good in overall performance, with excellent indirect cooking and good evenness at high and low temperatures. AmazingRibs measured about a 5 F swing around setpoint at low temps, with a left-to-right gradient that grew from about 10 F to about 30 F at the 450 F max on the 2019 unit. Bob Vila’s hands-on run of ribs, pork butt and sausages found the hopper runs about 9 hours at high heat and up to 20 hours at low temps. Man Makes Fire, after 3+ years of ownership, measured 418 sq in of main grate and 154 sq in up top, and found real-world burger capacity below the official 24.

Searing, smoke and cold weather

The 500 F ceiling is a real limitation. AmazingRibs’ steak test at max temperature produced a pale, undercooked crust, and both Bob Vila and Grills.co recommend finishing sears in a cast-iron pan or on a kamado. Smoke flavor is mild compared with traditional smokers; owners add smoke tubes with wood chips to compensate. The single-wall body loses stability below about 40 F ambient, while the Ironwood and Timberline lines add double-wall insulation. Direct sunlight can add about 35 F to the chamber at 90 F ambient, which can stop the grill holding its 165 F minimum.

The pit probe and temperature gradients

The included probe is widely considered inaccurate. One Traeger Forum owner verified 15-20 F errors with a FireBoard system and recommends an external probe; another 2019 owner reported 30-100 F errors verified with an independent gauge. AmazingRibs measured a gradient of about 10 F left-to-right at low temps rising to about 30 F at max. Buy a separate thermometer and treat the built-in probe as a rough guide.

Reliability, repairs and running costs

This is the open question. The build is steel and the auger motor is brushless DC, but owner forums and Reddit show recurring controller failures, ER13 auger-disconnect errors, and auger jams from wet or clumped pellets. One owner reported a controller dying 34 days past the 3-year warranty, then getting a free replacement after posting on Reddit. Traeger sells exact Pro 575 parts — auger assembly, auger motor, controller, firepot and hot rod, grates, fan — and support articles walk through auger jams, ER13 errors and controller wiring with photos. A replacement controller costs $199.99 (Traeger parts, 2026).

Pellets cost about $20 a bag for Traeger brand; owners report third-party pellets such as Pit Boss at $9 and Bear Mountain at $10 for a 20 lb bag, roughly half the price. Bob Vila measured about 9 hours of runtime at high heat and up to 20 hours at low temps per 18 lb hopper; Grills.co estimates 1-1.5 lb/hr at 225 F, 2 lb/hr at 350 F and 2.5-3 lb/hr at 500 F. A 3-year owner estimates pellets cost roughly twice what propane would. Extras: the front shelf is $99.99-$109.99, a pellet sensor $124.99, a cover $89.99 and a replacement controller $199.99.

Is it worth it?

At Traeger’s $799.99 list price the Pro 575 is competent but no longer class-leading: Wirecutter’s top pellet pick is the Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24, CNET picks the Ironwood XL, and Business Insider picks the Woodridge Pro. Bob Vila reported it often sells around $600, which is where the value case strengthens. If you cook low and slow, want app control and value the 3-year warranty and parts network, the Pro 575 is a reasonable first pellet grill near $600. At list, weigh it against the Woodridge or the Ironwood XL.

Which model this is

This page covers the Traeger Pro 575 WiFIRE pellet grill, model TFB57GLE in black and TFB57GZEC in bronze. The Amazon listing for the black US variant is ASIN B0DK7ZWCTG. Don’t confuse it with the Pro 780, the insulated Ironwood and Timberline lines, or the newer Woodridge.
