Summary
A compact instant-read thermometer with a choice of 4.5-inch or 8-inch probes, an auto-rotating backlit display and an IP67 body. Food Network’s hands-on test confirmed the accuracy and the 2-3 second reads; the one thing to know is that the body, unlike the probe, is rated only for 32 to 122°F and must not go in the oven.
Strengths
- Food Network’s ice-bath and boiling-water tests confirmed the accuracy.
- A full reading in 2-3 seconds with the 4.5-inch probe.
- The IP67 body survives a dunking and wipes clean.
- The auto-rotating display reads from any angle.
- Ships with a NIST-traceable calibration certificate and NSF certification.
- One CR2032 cell is rated for 4,000 hours.
Weaknesses
- Food Network’s only criticism: “not as fast as some thermometers.”
- The body is rated only 32-122°F and must not be left in an oven, grill or smoker.
- Battery life is disputed: the manual says 5,000 hours, the product page 4,000.
- No instrumented test from Wirecutter, RTINGS, Tom’s Guide, CNET or PCMag.
- No Reddit or forum owner threads were accessible, so long-term reliability is unknown.

What it is
The ThermoPop 2 is the second-generation compact instant-read from ThermoWorks, launched in 2022 with a patented auto-rotating display. It comes with a 4.5-inch or 8-inch probe. The shorter probe reads in 2-3 seconds and the longer one in 3-4 seconds, so pick the 8-inch only if you need the reach into a deep pot or a big roast.
Accuracy and testing
Food Network tested a thick ribeye and a chicken breast, then checked the thermometer in ice water and boiling water; the readings matched and settled in 2-3 seconds. The unit carries a NIST-traceable certificate and NSF certification. ThermoWorks’ own home check is an ice bath reading within ±2°F of 32°F, and boiling point falls with elevation, so that check depends on where you live. Accuracy holds at ±1.0°F through the cooking range but loosens to ±4.0°F near 392-572°F.
Care, limits and running costs
Keep the body out of the heat: it is rated 32-122°F, and even the housing should not see over 190°F (88°C), so never leave it in an oven, grill, smoker or microwave. Store it with the sheath over the probe to protect it from other tools. New units have a protective sticker reading “162 F°” on the display that has to come off before use. The auto-off trips after 10 minutes and can be disabled by pressing the button six times.
Is it worth it?
Hey Grill Hey called the $35 price (2022) “an absolute steal” for a device this accurate. ThermoWorks markets it as budget-priced, and Food Network’s 2026 update still called it a great buy for the money. A reliable street price was not established, so check the live panel. It suits anyone who wants certified accuracy and waterproofing without a Thermapen budget; look elsewhere if raw speed is the priority.
