Summary

A two-piece kit that pairs the TP970 TempSpike Plus truly wireless leave-in probe with the TP620 TempSwift ELITE instant-read thermometer. Know two things before buying: the probe must be inserted all the way to its handle, and the food sensor is capped at 212°F, so thin cuts and very hot probe tips are not what it is for.

Strengths

  • The TP970 food probe was measured within 1°F at 130°F, 160°F and 205°F in an instrumented test.
  • It is truly wireless, with the signal relayed by a booster that sits near the cooker.
  • The set is cheap for a wireless probe with documented accuracy, at the manufacturer’s value-pack price.
  • The TP620 is a competent thermocouple instant-read for the final check.

Weaknesses

  • The TP970 probe must be inserted to the handle, so thin steaks and fillets are awkward.
  • Its food sensor is capped at 212°F, and exceeding that can damage the electronics.
  • The 600 ft range is line-of-sight, cut by walls and lids.
  • Owners of the earlier TempSpike generation report ambient readings running tens of degrees low.
  • The TP620 is a relabeled TP19X, and its response claim varies between 0.5 s and 1–3 s.
  • No independent test of the exact TP620 was found.

The two devices in the set

The leave-in half is the TempSpike Plus TP970: a thin probe that sits in the meat and sends readings to a booster/charger, which relays them to your phone over Bluetooth. The instant-read half is the TP620 TempSwift ELITE, a folding thermocouple thermometer with a 4.31 in stainless probe. TempPro — the manufacturer, formerly ThermoPro — sells the pair as a value pack. The TP620 is the same hardware ThermoPro sold as the TP19X, relabeled, so read its response claim as best-case.

Insertion depth and the food sensor

The probe is 2.5 in long, and its minimum insertion depth is also 2.5 in — it has to go in all the way to the handle, with no usable depth range. Deep roasts are fine; thin chops, steaks and fish fillets are not. The food sensor tops out at 212°F, and the manufacturer warns that higher probe-tip temperatures can damage the electronics, so the tip needs to stay in the cooler center and below that ceiling.

Range and how the booster works

The claimed 600 ft is a line-of-sight maximum. TempPro’s own note says walls and interference such as a smoker or grill lid cut into it, so the booster needs a clear path to the phone and should sit near the cooker. The probe itself does not talk to the phone directly.

Accuracy testing

He did not retest the ambient end on the Plus, because the earlier TempSpike passed those points. Ambient is still the soft spot: an owner of the previous-generation TempSpike reported the ambient sensor reading roughly 60–115°F below a wired reference in a smoker. No instrumented test of the exact TP620 was found, so its accuracy and half-second response are manufacturer claims.

Is it worth it?

Around $80–100 it still makes sense if you need the wireless probe specifically. Above roughly $110–130 the case weakens: the TP980 TempSpike Pro was $99.99–$124.99 direct with Wi-Fi, four probes and a ±0.5°F rating, which is more tool for similar money. The TP620 on its own was $39.99, and it is a bonus here, not the reason to buy.

Which model this is

This page covers the TP970 TempSpike Plus and TP620 TempSwift ELITE set, not the original TempSpike TP960, the twin-probe TP962/TP972, the Wi-Fi TempSpike Pro TP980, or the older TP19W + TP960W combo. The TP970 probe is 2.5 in long against the TP960’s 5.16 in, so any 5.16 in spec table is a different model. The Amazon listing for this set is ASIN B0H25VWM98.
