Summary

A folding thermocouple instant-read thermometer for grilling and everyday cooking, with a rotating backlit display, user calibration and a 3-year warranty.

Strengths

  • Accuracy stayed within ±0.9°F in independent ice-water and boiling-water tests.
  • The 180° rotating backlit display works for left- and right-handed use.
  • Folding the probe triggers auto on/off and saves battery.
  • User calibration lets you correct drift with an ice-water bath at home.

Weaknesses

  • The 0.5-second claim does not hold up: every independent test measured 1-3 seconds.
  • The back magnet is weak enough that the unit sags on a refrigerator door.
  • The backlit display is hard to read in direct sunlight.
  • IP65 is real but more limited than “waterproof” marketing suggests; one tester advises wiping rather than rinsing.
  • There is no user-serviceable probe or repair program, so a failure means replacing the unit.
  • No major independent test outlet has reviewed this exact model.

What 0.5 seconds really means

TempPro’s US product page claims a 0.5-second response. Treat 1-3 seconds as the working number, still faster than most budget NTC thermometers.

Accuracy and build

Accuracy is the strongest part. The probe folds into the body, the display rotates for either hand, and user calibration via an ice-water bath means you can correct drift yourself.

Water resistance and upkeep

IP65 means protection against low-pressure water jets. One tester reads that conservatively and advises wiping the thermometer with a cloth rather than rinsing it under running water; TempPro’s own copy is looser and calls it rinse-safe. The probe and electronics are not user-serviceable, so if either fails the unit is replaced. The only routine cost is a 1 × AAA battery, and there is no probe-replacement program.

Is it worth it?

At $39.99 direct from TempPro (2026), down from a $49.99 list, the TP620 is a sensible buy for a home cook who wants thermocouple accuracy and a 3-year warranty without spending Thermapen money. Testers have paid $49.99 (The Barbecue Lab, 2024) and $54.99 (AmazingRibs, 2021). Under $25 it is a strong value; $26-40 is fair to good; above $41 the value weakens, because established alternatives carry deeper independent testing. Ignore the 0.5-second claim at any price.

Which model this is

This is the TP620, sold as the TempSwift ELITE TP620 and previously marketed as the TP-19X; TempPro says the two model numbers are the same product. The Amazon listing is ASIN B08BC9KF45.

Don’t confuse it with the TP19H, a different NTC-sensor model that shares the temperature range and a similar body.
