Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A heavy, reversible edge-grain teak carving board with a juice canal on one side, backed by a decade of independent testing. Check the warranty before you buy: the 1-year coverage applies only to boards bought directly from Teakhaus, not to the Amazon listing most US shoppers will use.

Strengths

  • It needed 2.9 g of oil per maintenance session, second-lowest in ATK’s lineup, against a 26.5 g average for end-grain boards.
  • A nine-board comparison ranked the same construction 2nd of 9 for knife dulling and 2nd for chopping noise at 65.3 dB.
  • Teak’s natural oils resisted chipotle staining in ATK’s tests, which left “virtually no evidence”.
  • The reversible layout gives a flat prep side and a juice-canal carving side, with hand grips at each end.
  • ATK has recommended Teakhaus edge-grain boards since 2013, and one same-series board is reported still smooth after 12 years.

Weaknesses

  • The 1-year warranty covers only boards bought on teakhaus.com; Amazon, Walmart and other retail purchases are excluded.
  • At 12 lb it is heavier than ATK’s 6-10 lb preference for carving boards, and owners call it big and awkward to maneuver.
  • Teak contains silica: ATK’s robot test left the teak board’s knife the dullest of the lineup after 5,000 cuts.
  • Owners repeatedly report raised grain and splinters out of the box that take several rounds of sanding to smooth.
  • Garlic odor retention shows up in Reddit threads and in Prudent Reviews’ one-wash test.
  • Knife marks show on edge grain by design, and owners say they “really stand out” after seasoning.

What the independent tests measured

No lab has instrumented the exact SKU 109. The evidence is same-brand, same-construction: ATK tested the canal-free SKU 106 at this exact size and rated it “Great Smaller Option” — 10 lb ¾ oz, intact and unwarped after 100 hand washes over six months, with a few knife marks. Its 2.9 g of oil per maintenance session was second-lowest of all boards tested; edge-grain boards averaged 6.6 g against 26.5 g for end-grain. The 24 x 18 in canal sibling (SKU 108) is the board ATK rated “Best Carving/Cutting Board”, measured at 14.30 lb with a 6 oz canal capacity — the only measured Teakhaus canal capacity anywhere. ATK’s stated ideal carving-board weight is about 6-10 lb.

Prudent Reviews’ nine-board test used the groove-free 24 x 18 in Professional, not this model: 2nd of 9 for knife dulling (sharpness 315 to 351, a loss of 36), 2nd for chopping noise at 65.3 dB, no beet or chipotle staining, a slight garlic smell after one wash, and $0.26 per square inch. Food & Wine’s roundup lists the wide juice wells as a drawback because they reduce usable surface area.

Care, repairs and running costs

Teakhaus pre-oils the board with mineral oil and beeswax, but owners report it arrives dry and “drinks oil the first time”. Oil every exposed surface — sides, edges and bottom — 2-3 times a month for daily use, let it soak 4-6 hours or overnight, and wipe off the excess. Never use vegetable or olive oil; they go rancid. Every 6-12 months, Teakhaus recommends light sanding at 150-220 grit and a heavy oiling treatment. The dishwasher is, in Teakhaus’s words, “the number one way people ruin quality cutting boards”; Teakhaus cites 140-160°F wash temperatures. No soaking, no bleach, no oven, no direct sunlight.

Small surface cracks can be stabilized with food-grade wood glue, clamped, cured 24 hours, sanded and re-oiled. A warped board can sometimes be reversed by weighting it concave-side down under a damp towel for 24-48 hours. Through-cracks should end food use. The running cost is board oil — Teakhaus’s EON conditioner or any food-grade mineral oil — plus sandpaper. There are no powered parts and no consumable lock-in.

Warranty and returns

Teakhaus’s 1-year warranty covers “severe damage from defects” on boards bought at teakhaus.com, with proof of purchase and photos, and promises a response in 5-10 business days. Boards bought at Amazon, Walmart, other marketplaces or retail stores are excluded — and the exclusions swallow the most common complaints: cracking from inadequate oiling, warping from damp or dry storage or dishwasher use, mold from humid storage, and stains and odors from regular use are all uncovered. Since the listing most US shoppers will use is an Amazon listing, a buyer of it generally gets no Teakhaus warranty at all, only the marketplace’s own return window.

Direct purchases can be returned within 30 days, unused and in original packaging, minus a $14.99 return fee (48 contiguous states) or $19.99 (AK/HI) — the boards are heavy to ship. A separate 15-day window covers arrival damage, with a replacement and no return fee.

Is it worth it?

The street price moves a lot, so treat any single figure as a snapshot. Teakhaus direct lists SKU 109 at $140.00 (2026-10-15). ATK listed the canal-free 106 at $113 and the 24 x 18 in 107 at $139, reduced to $124. WebstaurantStore sells the 106 at $74.49 with a minimum order of 2. Walmart’s brand page showed the 106 at $119.99. At Costco, owners report paying $54.99 and later $59.99 for the 24 x 18 in board — roughly half the direct price. The direct-to-marketplace spread on the same sizes runs about 30-45%.

At or below about $120 it is easy to recommend: it carries the strongest independent test record of any board in this class. Teakhaus’s own $140 is defensible only if you specifically want the juice canal and the direct-purchase warranty. Above $140, compare the 24 x 18 in SKU 108, the board ATK rated highest — it is frequently discounted to $124. Before paying list anywhere, check warehouse clubs and closeout retailers; owners repeatedly flag Costco and TJ Maxx as half-price routes into the identical construction.

Which model this is

This page covers Teakhaus SKU 109, the “Traditional Carving Board w/ Juice Canal” at 20 x 15 x 1.5 in. Do not confuse it with SKU 106, the same size without a canal; SKU 108, the 24 x 18 in canal board; or SKU 110, the 16 x 12 in. Teakhaus’s size labels collide — SKU 109 is “(M)” on its own product page and “(L)” on collection pages, while ATK’s “(L)” is the canal-free 106 — so match on SKU and dimensions, not the letter. The boards are also sold under the TeakHaus by Proteak and Proteak names. The Amazon listing for this board is ASIN B06VT56XFQ.
