Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A budget 1.75 mm standard PLA spool for everyday FDM printing, in Sky Blue, sold by SUNLU. Check your print requirements before buying: batch-to-batch variance and moisture sensitivity make it a better fit for drafts and prototypes than for tight-tolerance or load-bearing parts.

Strengths

  • Budget price per kilogram with wide retail availability.
  • Easy to print on most FDM printers; beginner-friendly.
  • Broad color range, with Sky Blue a stocked variant.
  • Low warping on everyday prints; good value for drafts and prototypes.
  • Vacuum packaging and pre-dried filament claimed by reviewers.
  • Extensive community support and shared print profiles.

Weaknesses

  • Batch-to-batch variance; a new spool may need a temperature tweak.
  • Moisture sensitivity causes stringing and poor surface finish on open-stored spools.
  • Not suited to tight-tolerance, dimensional or load-bearing parts.
  • Minor color differences between production batches.
  • Some spools may not fit enclosed feeders or AMS-style systems.
  • No independent instrumented tests found; specs are manufacturer and TDS values.

Printing and tuning

SUNLU lists nozzle 200–240°C with bed 50–60°C; a TDS aggregator lists bed 60–70°C. The manufacturer suggests 200–210°C at 50–100 mm/s and 210–240°C at 100–200 mm/s. Reconcile the bed temperature against the TDS PDF before relying on either. Print speed 50–200 mm/s, retraction 0.8–1.2 mm at 30–40 mm/s, cooling fan on. Batch variance means a new spool may need a temperature tweak. The manufacturer claim of compatibility with 99% of FDM printers is not a guarantee of enclosed-feeder fit.

Moisture and storage

Store opened spools sealed with desiccant; dry spools open more than a few weeks, about 4–6 h at 45–50°C. Vacuum packaging and pre-dried filament are claimed by reviewers. Stringing is reported on SUNLU PLA and PLA+; it is usually manageable with drying and tuning. Ownership costs are limited to desiccant, dry storage and occasional drying; there is no subscription or lock-in.

Color and batch variance

Sky Blue references differ by source: manufacturer RGB #15A9C2, measured RGB #0CB7CC, perceptual estimate #3cd0fd. “Sky Blue” appears in the store’s color image set but is not among the 20 colors in the color code table on the sunlu.com PLA page, so treat it as a current or variant color name. Minor color differences between production batches are reported. Color naming also varies: “PLA”, “SUNLU PLA 3D Printer Filament 1KG”, and “PLA Basic” are all used.

Is it worth it?

Budget tier at roughly $11–17 per kg. 3D Filament Profiles lists 1 kg with spool at $11.49 (CA), $11.59 (US), $14.49 (EU) for Sky Blue, updated about 17 h before page capture. Easy4DPrint estimates a street price of about $15.99/kg. SpoolScout lists 1 kg options from $12.59 to $17.08. Premium PLA (Prusament-class, PolyMaker) costs more and offers tighter consistency; choose it for dimensional or functional parts. Strong value for high-volume iteration; weak value where tight tolerance, heat or outdoor exposure matter.
