Summary
A $99.99 powered replacement lid that adds active filament drying to an existing first-generation Bambu Lab AMS, drying while you print at 35-70°C. Check before buying: it fits only the Gen 1 AMS, all four spools share one temperature, and one owner reported a mainboard sparking after about 100 hours.
Strengths
- Dries filament without removing spools from the AMS.
- Retains original AMS loading and filament routing.
- Adjustable 35-70°C setpoint with presets and timed heating.
- Hinge swap is mechanically straightforward on an original AMS.
- Takes less desk space than a separate four-roll dryer.
Weaknesses
- Fits only the Gen 1 AMS; not the AMS Lite or AMS 2 Pro.
- All four spools share one temperature setting.
- Vents must be opened and closed manually.
- High temperatures can deform PLA parts and accessories in the AMS.
- One owner reported a mainboard sparking after about 100 hours of use.

Drying performance and heat
SUNLU claims 70°C in about 20 minutes, but that is an air-temperature claim under unspecified test conditions, not proof that a spool core has dried. The manual lists multi-hour drying times for several materials. Because all four positions share one chamber, a 65-70°C cycle for engineering filament can overheat PLA spools, printed adapters and AMS components. Select the temperature for the most heat-sensitive item loaded, or use a separate dryer for higher temperatures. The AMS 2 Pro dries up to 65°C but, per Bambu’s FAQ, does not dry spools while the AMS is actively feeding in a print, which SUNLU’s design does.
Problems and failures
Owner anecdotes are not controlled failure-rate statistics.
- Electrical arcing: one r/BambuLab poster reported the mainboard of an approximately 100-hour unit sparking while running; the owner heard intermittent fan or cable resonance beforehand and switched off power. No independent forensic diagnosis or recall was found. Treat crackling, burning smell or visible sparks as an immediate stop-use condition.
- Possible AMS feeder heat damage: one owner reported excess filament pulling after months of 50-60°C use for TPU; Bambu replaced the hub and motor and suspected heat, while SUNLU support reportedly advised staying below 40°C. That advice is not a published manufacturer-wide limit.
- Softened PLA and jams: owners reported PLA components deforming, filament kinking at the AMS funnel and loaded PLA snagging while another material dried. PETG replacements for printed accessories were suggested.
- Fan resonance: one owner with two units reported vibration and slow support response.
- Humidity readout mismatch: one unit read 20% while a separate device read 50%, and humidity rebounded near 50% about two hours after closing the lid in a humid apartment. Seal, sensor location and vent position can explain this.
- Fit and shipping: one owner said the supplied Allen wrench was too large for the hinge screws; another reworked hinge clearance without achieving an expected seal.
Parts and running costs
No scheduled consumable, filter or drying agent is prescribed; this is a heating lid, not a cartridge product. The existing AMS desiccant, spool adapters, PTFE tubing, feed motors and rollers belong to the AMS and are not included. Hinge hardware (four hinges, eight Allen screws, one wrench), the power cable, fan, PTC heaters, sensors, display and circuit board have no verified SUNLU replacement part numbers or US prices; no reports found. Electricity is the measurable recurring cost, but the 220 W rated, 390 W maximum and 0.6 W standby figures are manufacturer labels, not measured duty-cycle traces. At a hypothetical average of 220 W for 3 hours on 200 days, that is 132 kWh or $26.40 per year at $0.20 per kWh; at the 390 W maximum throughout it is 234 kWh or $46.80 per year; standby at 0.6 W for 18 hours a day is 3.942 kWh or $0.79 per year. These are illustrative scenarios, not test results. Unexpected AMS repairs, deformed accessories and desiccant have no defensible annual dollar amount; no reports found.
Is it worth it?
At $99.99 from the SUNLU US store, the upgrade suits an original AMS owner who regularly prints moisture-sensitive filament and wants less spool shuffling, and who accepts the manual vents, shared temperature and emerging safety reports. Below $90 delivered it is a good price for that buyer. Between $90 and $105 it is conditional. Above $110-120, consider a separate SUNLU FilaDryer S4 at about $116.99 or a more capable upgrade. If mixing PLA with engineering filament at different temperatures is routine, the EIBOS Tetras at about $199.99 offers four independently controlled compartments. The Bambu AMS 2 Pro at $359 is a full replacement with up to 65°C drying but does not dry while feeding. Avoid unattended use, and stop immediately on electrical crackling or arcing.
Which model this is
The SUNLU AMS Heater, a hinged replacement top cover for the first-generation Bambu Lab AMS. The original AMS is not included. The manual labels the model simply “AMS Heater.” The heater cover measures 363 × 278 × 131 mm and weighs 1.7 kg. SUNLU sells a US-plug version; choose the correct regional unit.
