SUNLU AMS Heater for Bambu Lab AMS: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-23

Summary

The SUNLU AMS Heater is a $99.99 powered replacement lid that adds active drying to a first-generation Bambu Lab AMS, drying while you print at 35-70°C. Owners report electrical arcing after about 100 hours, feeder heat damage during 50-60°C use, softened PLA and jams, fan resonance and humidity readouts that do not match a second meter. It has no scheduled consumable, so the only recurring cost is electricity, roughly $26.40 to $46.80 per year in the illustrative scenarios, and it is a good buy below about $90 delivered.

Common problems and fixes

Parts and consumables

No scheduled consumable, filter or drying agent is prescribed.

Yearly running cost

No subscription or filter. Electricity only: rated 220 W, maximum 390 W, standby 0.6 W. Illustrative scenarios, not measurements: 3 hours of drying on 200 days at an assumed 220 W average = 132 kWh = $26.40 per year at an assumed $0.20 per kWh; at the 390 W maximum throughout = 234 kWh = $46.80; standby at 0.6 W for 18 hours a day = 3.942 kWh = $0.79. Unexpected AMS repairs, deformed accessories and desiccant have no defensible annual dollar amount. [2][3]

When it is a good buy

SUNLU US store listed the heater at $99.99 in October 2026, discounted from a displayed $119.99, with a historical reviewer citation of $119.99 regular / $109.99 sale in July 2025. Below $90 delivered is a good price for an owner of a compatible AMS who accepts the manual vents, shared temperature and emerging safety reports. Between $90 and $105 it is conditional. Above $110-120, consider a separate SUNLU FilaDryer S4 at about $116.99 or a more capable upgrade. If mixing PLA with engineering filament at different temperatures is routine, the EIBOS Tetras at about $199.99 offers four independently controlled compartments. The Bambu AMS 2 Pro at $359 is a full replacement with up to 65°C drying but does not dry while feeding. Avoid unattended use, and stop immediately on electrical crackling or arcing.
