Summary

A 220 W PTC heater that replaces the lid of a first-generation Bambu Lab AMS so you can dry filament while printing. Check compatibility first: it fits AMS Gen 1 only, not AMS 2 or AMS Lite.

Strengths

  • Adds active drying to an existing AMS Gen 1 without replacing the whole unit.
  • Dries while you print, so rolls do not need pre-drying in a separate dryer.
  • Owners report humidity dropping noticeably and less stringing.
  • Four-screw install that reuses the original lid hinge; the flat top lets AMS units stack.
  • Costs about half of moving to the Bambu Lab AMS 2 Pro.
  • The included manual vent is opened during drying to let moisture escape.

Weaknesses

  • Fits the first-generation AMS only; AMS 2 and AMS Lite are not compatible.
  • Fan noise is the common complaint, one owner calling two units “terrible”.
  • Sustained heat can deform PLA spool adapters and kink PLA filament at the feeding funnel.
  • No handle or groove, so lifting it one-handed is awkward.
  • Filament levels cannot be seen from above; you have to lift the lid.
  • One owner reported AMS damage when running the heater above 40°C.

Drying filament while you print

The unit slides on where the stock AMS lid sat, using four screws and the included hex wrench, and you move the original hinge pieces across to the new cover. Once sealed, the PTC heater and its dual fans push warmth through the chamber, and the front touchscreen sets a material-specific temperature up to 70°C. SUNLU rates up to 99 hours of drying, and the humidity control turns the heater on between 25% and 50% and off at 20%.

The point of the design is doing this during a print rather than before it. Owners describe it as a real workflow change: humidity inside the AMS drops and stringing falls off. The flat top is a small bonus, letting you stack AMS units. It adds roughly an inch of height over the original lid.

Noise, heat and installation quirks

Fan noise is the most common criticism. One owner said two heaters together “sounded terrible” at first, while another compared a single unit to a small, quiet air purifier, so the experience varies. Heat is the other caution. Under sustained warmth, PLA spool adapters can deform, cardboard rolls can contract and shed adapters, and PLA filament can kink at the feeding funnel; the community advice is to swap PLA components for PETG and rotate rolls. Desiccant jars can also unscrew as the temperature cycles. The included hex key has been reported as oversized and needing modification to fit the screws. One owner reported damaging an AMS by running the heater above 40°C. There is no independent lab measurement of heat-up time, temperature uniformity or fan noise, so all of this is owner experience rather than bench data.

The SUNLU US store listed the AMS Heater at $101.99 when checked on 2026-10-14. Creative Bloq’s August 2025 review saw an early-bird price of $109.99 and a regular $119.99, and The Gadgeteer saw $119.99 regular with $109.99 on sale in July 2025. At or below roughly $100 it is strong value for an AMS Gen 1 owner; $101–$120 is still reasonable; above $120 the money is better saved toward the AMS 2 Pro or a standalone dryer.

Recurring costs are small: electricity (220 W while the heater runs) and desiccant for maintenance. Keep the top vent open during drying and closed when you are done. The warranty runs 12 months from purchase, and the unit is sealed with no documented user-serviceable parts.

Which model this is

The SUNLU AMS Heater replaces the top cover of the Bambu Lab AMS Gen 1 to enable drying and printing at the same time. SUNLU also sells an AMS Lite Heater for the A1, A1 Mini and A2L, plus standalone FilaDryer S2/S4/SP2/E2 units; none of those is interchangeable with this one.

The US Amazon listing is ASIN B0GL6KGZ9B.
