Summary
The largest round cocotte Staub sells: a 34 cm enameled cast iron Dutch oven, about 24 lb empty, built to serve 12 to 15. No independent test covers this exact size, so its cooking behaviour is inferred from Staub pots of half the capacity.
Strengths
- Enormous capacity: one of the largest enameled cast iron pots sold.
- Spiked self-basting lid returns moisture to the food.
- Even heat retention, demonstrated by Staub tests in smaller sizes.
- Matte black interior hides stains and wear.
- All cooktops including induction, and oven-safe to 500°F with the lid.
- Made in France with a limited lifetime warranty.
Weaknesses
- At 23.70-24.12 lb empty it is a two-person lift once full.
- Owners report rim-enamel chipping, which Zwilling treats as normal wear outside the warranty.
- The dark interior hides fond and is hard to clean fully.
- No test covers the 13.25 qt size, so performance at this volume is inferred.
- The knob and handles are small for the pot’s size.

How it performs
Every lab test found covers a smaller cocotte. Consumer Reports tested a 5.5 qt, Good Housekeeping pitted a 5.5 qt against Le Creuset, and CNET, Food & Wine and Serious Eats all worked in the 4-7 qt range. Brand-level results are strong on heat retention and moisture and mixed on browning and cleaning: in Good Housekeeping’s stew test, Staub browned meat about a minute slower than Le Creuset and its dark interior made fond hard to see, yet its broth came out richer. An independent blog test measured water retention of 95.3% for Staub, versus 91.8% for Le Creuset and 87.5% for Lodge. None of that was measured on a pot this size, where the thermal mass is more than double.
Owner reports and upkeep
Owner discussion of the largest cocotte is thin. The recurring brand-level complaint is rim-enamel chipping: an r/AskCulinary thread reports a new large cocotte arriving with chips on the rim and exposed iron, and Zwilling’s warranty treats enamel wear as excluded normal use rather than a defect. Zwilling sells a discounted “visual imperfections” factory-second version of this exact pot, which confirms that cosmetic flaws are common enough to warrant their own channel. Enameled cast iron is not user-serviceable; Zwilling replaces rather than repairs. The only documented wear part is the lid knob, sold separately for roughly $13-27.
Is it worth it?
US retail runs $669.99 at Zwilling and $669.95 at Sur La Table, Cooks Warehouse and Cutlery and More (2026). Food-service and clearance channels list it lower: DEI Equipment at $539.31 (down from a $957 list) and La Guilde Culinaire at $522-530. Buy it only if the 34 cm size is a regular need — batch cooking, canning-scale stocks, feeding a crowd — and ideally at those lower prices. At full retail, most households are better served by the most-tested 7 qt cocotte, which costs far less; the 5.5 qt is $429.99 at Zwilling.
