Summary
The Sony WH-CH520 is an entry-level on-ear Bluetooth headset with a built-in microphone, two-device multipoint and battery life that can stretch toward two days of listening. Check your fit and listening environment before buying: there is no active noise cancellation, and the pads press on your ears rather than around them.
Strengths
- SoundGuys measured 55 h 25 m of playback, above Sony’s own maximum estimate.
- Reviewers praise clarity and balance for the price, and the app EQ is genuinely useful.
- Two-source multipoint is rare at this price.
- It is light at 147 g and reasonably comfortable for many users.
- Genuine Sony replacement pads exist at $16.95 each, with model-specific part numbers.
Weaknesses
- No active noise cancellation and only modest passive isolation, so loud commutes come through.
- On-ear pads press against the ears and can clash with spectacle arms.
- Bluetooth only: no 3.5 mm or USB audio, and latency rules out reaction-sensitive gaming.
- It does not fold and ships without a protective case.
- Owners report Bluetooth dropouts, charging failures and broken headband sliders.
- Repairs are product-exchange only, with no listed user-replaceable battery.

Battery life and charging
Sony’s own figures are workload-dependent: up to 50 hours of AAC music, 45 hours on SBC and 40 hours of calls. A three-minute charge is quoted to give about 1.5 hours of playback and ten minutes about 5.5 hours, with roughly three hours to a full charge over USB-C; charging is specified for 5-35 °C (41-95 °F). Running the EQ or DSEE shortens endurance. Independent testing by SoundGuys recorded 55 h 25 m under its own settings, higher than Sony’s maximum estimate, though volume, codec and settings change real-world results. There is no 3.5 mm socket and no USB audio, so an empty battery means the headset simply stops, with no wired fallback.
Bluetooth, multipoint and the app
The WH-CH520 pairs over Bluetooth 5.2 with SBC and AAC, and it holds a connection to two devices at once through multipoint, configured in the Sony Sound Connect app. In practice playback usually has to stop on one source before the other takes over, and Sony’s help guide documents cases where a device keeps sending a silent audio stream and blocks the switch. The app also carries an equalizer, CLEAR BASS, DSEE processing, connection-quality settings and firmware updates; the current US firmware is 1.0.6, dated February 5, 2026. Owners describe intermittent dropouts, and one February 2026 report had two units take 5-10 minutes to connect through a Realtek-equipped Windows 11 desktop before a power-saving setting change fixed it.
Fit, isolation and comfort
The earcups sit directly on the ears, so fit is the deciding variable. Isolation is meaningful only at higher frequencies and with a good seal, and RTINGS rated the model mediocre for commuting because voices and traffic pass through; it is not the headset for aircraft or loud transit. The pads can also press the ears into spectacle arms over a long shift, and one owner in March 2026 reported the headband gap catching longer hair. Some owners find the housing comfortable and some do not, so a return policy is worth having.
Parts, repairs and running costs
No routine consumable is on a manufacturer schedule, and there are no mandatory fees to use Bluetooth audio. Genuine Sony pads are the main spare part: black 9-301-016-93 runs $16.95 per pad ($33.90 a pair) from the Sony-authorized Encompass portal, with white 9-301-016-95, blue 9-301-016-94 and beige 9-301-016-96 for other colors. The original short USB-A-to-USB-C cable, 9-301-016-97, is listed at $31.95, which is close to the price of a new headset; a standard third-party charging cable is the rational replacement, though no specific one was price-verified. Replacing both pads once a year would be an optional $33.90 before tax and shipping. The bigger constraint is serviceability: Sony’s US service manual states a product-exchange policy and lists only the cable, individual earpads and the reference guide as separately serviced, so there is no listed consumer replacement battery, headband or hinge part. Do not count on a cheap internal battery repair.
Support and warranty
A US retailer’s bundle listing describes a one-year limited manufacturer’s warranty for parts and labor, and Sony provides a model-specific warranty document through its support portal; defect coverage does not extend to ordinary wear, crushing or accidental breakage. Sony’s June 2026 US notice says it does not cover outside servicers’ charges, while the exclusion for third-party components applies when that activity causes the malfunction, so a third-party cable alone is not stated to void coverage. Before sending a low-priced unit in, try the factory initialize procedure: turn the headset off, disconnect the charging cable, then hold Power and Volume Down for ten seconds or more until the blue light flashes four times, which erases pairing information.
Is it worth it?
Sony US lists the WH-CH520 at $33, down from a $69.99 reference price, and Walmart and Sweetwater showed $33 for the black model (October 2026). At $30-$35 it is an excellent buy for a quiet-environment, Bluetooth-only listener who tolerates on-ear pads; $36-$45 is reasonable if a preferred color or return terms matter; and $50 or more is hard to justify, because Sony’s September 2026 WH-CH530 is $58, the on-ear JBL Tune 520BT is about $34.95 at Walmart, and Sony’s over-ear ANC WH-CH720N is $88. Do not pay $60-$70 for a basic WH-CH520 without comparing those. A Best Buy listing surfaced $68, and bundles with accessories run higher, so distinguish the plain headset from bundles and refurbished stock.
Which model this is
This is the Sony WH-CH520, US black color code WHCH520/B, service model YY2958. It is an on-ear, closed-back Bluetooth headset with no active noise cancellation and no wired playback path. Do not confuse it with the over-ear ANC WH-CH720N or with the September 2026 WH-CH530 successor, which Sony lists at $58 and rates at up to 55 hours of playback.
