Summary
Sony’s lightest over-ear noise-cancelling headphone at 192 g, with 35 hours of rated battery and the same V1 processor as the flagship line. Check the noise cancelling before you buy: measured tests call it decent, not class-leading.
Strengths
- At 192 g it is Sony’s lightest over-ear noise-cancelling model, and owners wear it for hours without fatigue.
- Battery life is strong: 35 hours rated with noise cancelling on, 50 with it off, and RTINGS measured over 38 hours.
- Multipoint pairs two devices at once, and the Sony app adds a useful EQ and ambient sound control.
- Wired listening works with no battery, using the detachable cable.
- Reviewers rate the sound well for the price, especially once you tune the bass in the app.
Weaknesses
- Noise cancelling is mid-pack: RTINGS says it struggles with bass-range noise, and GearLab scores it 5.1/10.
- The build is hard plastic and looks budget, there is no carrying case, and the earcups swivel but do not fold.
- No LDAC, so Android listeners are limited to SBC and AAC.
- Bass is boomy out of the box, though the app EQ helps.
- No wear detection, so music keeps playing when you remove the headphones.
- Some owners report the earcup mount or retaining clip detaching under normal use.

Noise cancelling and what to expect
The noise cancelling is the spec to discount. Consumer Reports calls the active noise reduction excellent and strongest at low frequencies, but RTINGS measured it struggling to cut bass-range noise and rates the headphones 7.1/10, GearLab scores the ANC 5.1/10, and Engadget judged it a slight step back from the older WH-CH710N. Expect decent commuting noise reduction rather than flagship-class silence. Consumer Reports also notes a faint rushing sound in quiet rooms with ANC on, and call quality drops as background noise rises.
Battery life and charging
Sony rates 35 hours with noise cancelling on and 50 hours off, and communication at 35 and 40 hours. A full charge takes about 3.5 hours, and a 3-minute top-up gives about an hour of playback while 10 minutes gives about 4.5 hours. The EQ, DSEE and voice-assistant launch all cut into those numbers, and a 15-minute auto power-off setting helps stretch the battery.
Build, comfort and the app
The frame and earcups are mostly plastic, with some metal in the headband. Trusted Reviews notes Sony uses recycled plastic and that the frame survived weeks of bag use without creaking or scratches, while CNET and Engadget describe a plasticky, budget feel. At 192 g it stays comfortable for long sessions, and the physical buttons are easier to use in the cold than a touch panel, though the middle multi-function button is hard to find by feel. The earcups swivel flat but do not fold, and no case is included; Yahoo’s reviewer also found the bundled USB-C cable short and the L/R labels hard to read.
Is it worth it?
Below about $100 the CH720N is an easy pick: 192 g of comfort, 35-hour battery and a known brand. From $100 to $130 it is still sensible for comfort-first listeners, but measured ANC alternatives are worth comparing. Above $130 the missing case, average measured ANC and plastic build make it hard to justify, and paying Sony’s $179.99 store list is a stretch when reviewers called it pricey at $150. Street prices have run well below list: Tom’s Guide’s 2023 face-off saw $75.99 at Walmart and $139.99 at Best Buy, What Hi-Fi? tested it at $129, Yahoo’s July 2024 review sat at $148, and PCMag reported it under $100 in August 2026.
