Summary
A large, bass-forward IP67 portable Bluetooth speaker with a claimed 24-hour battery and built-in party lights, built for parties and the outdoors rather than accuracy.
Strengths
- Loud, bass-forward sound with strong low end for its size.
- Claimed 24-hour battery, plus a USB-A output to top up a phone.
- IP67 dust and water resistance for poolside and outdoor use.
- Built-in party lighting and a graphic EQ in the Sony Music Center app.
- The battery is user-replaceable, with an iFixit guide and third-party packs.
- Party Connect links up to 100 compatible speakers.
Weaknesses
- Heavy at about 6.5 lb (2,950 g), a real limit for carrying.
- Reviews find the sound uneven and not accurate, with weak deep bass and compression at high volume.
- Some owners report Bluetooth dropouts that stop playback.
- Charging and battery faults show up on aging units, and loud use can drain the battery even while plugged in.
- Discontinued and replaced by Sony’s ULT FIELD series, so stock and support are limited.
- IP67 depends on the rear cap being closed.

Sound and battery life
Sony claims up to 24 hours of playback and about 14 hours with the lighting on in EXTRA BASS mode. Real-world life varies with volume, temperature, and content; RTINGS measured closer to 15 hours in one comparison. PCMag calls the output powerful and bass-forward with sculpted highs, but not accurate. RTINGS finds the profile uneven even with EXTRA BASS and ClearAudio+ on, with weak deep bass, a narrow soundstage, and compression at high volume. Consumer Reports rates the sound Good, with bass a bit subdued and a somewhat congested midrange. Vocals stay clear through a balanced midrange, and the graphic EQ in the Sony Music Center app lets you tune the rest.
Charging and upkeep
Charging takes about 5 hours with the speaker off. Sony recommends a USB AC adaptor rated 3.0 A and does not guarantee adaptors below 1.5 A; loud use can drain the battery even while plugged in, and the sound can drop when the battery is low. During long storage, charge the battery about once every 6 months, and charge between 41°F and 95°F (5°C and 35°C). There are no subscriptions or running costs beyond the eventual battery.
The battery is user-replaceable. iFixit publishes a step-by-step guide that needs a T8 Torx and a Phillips #1 screwdriver, and third-party packs are sold, such as a 5200 mAh / 39.6 Wh Li-ion pack (ID659B) with a one-year warranty. No repairability score was listed with the guide.
Owner reports and reliability
Owner feedback is mostly positive on sound, battery, and ruggedness, with one owner using it six hours a day. Recurring complaints cover weight, Bluetooth dropouts, and battery or charging faults on aging units. One owner reports music stopping constantly over Bluetooth to an iPhone and a MacBook, and a Sony community thread describes a unit that would not charge. Some speakers stop turning on. Nobody has published a failure rate, so treat these as individual reports rather than a defect pattern.
Is it worth it?
Sony launched the SRS-XB43 at $249.99 (2020), and reviewers listed it around $280 in 2022. It is discontinued, so value now rests on clearance or used pricing: at a deep discount it stays a capable, rugged speaker, while near its original price newer speakers offer Bluetooth 5.3, better codecs, and an active warranty. Tom’s Tek Stop put new stock between roughly $83 and $220 in 2024, with an average near $149, and a used eBay example sat around $148.
