Summary

A compact 3.1 soundbar with a wireless subwoofer that decodes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X and virtualizes height and surround from the bar alone. Check your room and expectations: the “7.1.2” claim is virtual processing, with no upfiring drivers, no rear speakers and no way to add them.

Strengths

  • Dialogue clarity and voice enhancement praised across reviews.
  • Compact bar with a wireless subwoofer and easy plug-and-play setup.
  • Virtual height effects work in small rooms without extra speakers.
  • Solid music playback with a punchy subwoofer.
  • Decodes Dolby Atmos and DTS:X over HDMI.

Weaknesses

  • “7.1.2” is virtual: no upfiring or rear drivers, no expansion path.
  • Dense soundtracks can sound squashed or compressed.
  • No Wi-Fi streaming, app or built-in services at a $599 launch price.
  • No room correction and no graphic EQ.
  • Virtual Atmos height is less convincing than bars with real upfiring drivers.
  • Relatively expensive for what it delivers.

Virtual Atmos and height

The bar is physically 3.1. Sony’s Vertical Surround Engine and S-Force Pro Front Surround simulate height and surround from the front bar, so the “7.1.2” badge describes processing rather than speakers. Reviewers found the virtual height convincing in small rooms, but less so than bars with real upfiring drivers, and dense mixes can sound squashed or compressed.

Music and dialogue

Reviewers praised dialogue clarity and music performance, with a weighty, punchy presentation from the wireless subwoofer. The bar can get very loud, with thumping and compression at maximum volume, and some reviewers noted a lack of crispness and clarity. There is no graphic EQ to correct it, only EQ presets.

Connectivity and streaming

Connectivity is basic: one HDMI input, one HDMI output with ARC/eARC, optical input, USB for firmware updates only, and Bluetooth 5.0 with SBC and AAC. There is no Wi-Fi, no app and no built-in streaming services, and Bluetooth is stereo-only with lag risk if used for TV audio. The HDMI input does not pass copy-protected audio such as SACD or DVD-Audio.

Is it worth it?

At $300 or less it is a strong value; between $301 and $450 it is fair; above $450, bars with real upfiring drivers are the better buy. Trusted Reviews listed it under £400 in the UK in March 2021, and the launch price was $599. Sony’s warranty and manual could not be retrieved during this run and should be confirmed before purchase.

Which model this is

This page covers the Sony HT-G700, a black 3.1-channel soundbar with wireless subwoofer SA-WG700, introduced in 2020. Do not confuse it with Sony’s later BRAVIA Theater bars or other Sony 3.1 models. The bar is about 38.6 in (980 mm) wide, so it suits TVs 55 inches and larger.
