Summary
A 5-quart tilt-head stand mixer with a 750 W direct-drive motor, ten lever-selected speeds and a full set of mixing tools. Check the dough limit before you buy: the 2.1 kg figure is total dough including water, not flour, and the flour ceiling is 1.3 kg.
Strengths
- The 750 W direct-drive motor is paired with a weighted base and counter-weighted arm for stability.
- A silicone-edged flex-edge beater is included and scrapes the bowl as it mixes.
- Recipe testing handled double batches of whole wheat bread, ciabatta dough and Italian buttercream.
- Ten speeds with a smooth-start function and a gentle, controlled head lift.
- Genuine whisk, both beaters, the dough hook and a spare 5 qt bowl are sold separately.
- The front hub takes pasta rollers, cutters, an ice-cream maker, a grinder and a slicer.
Weaknesses
- At 21 lb and 16 in wide it is heavy to move and wants permanent counter space.
- The 2.1 kg dough ceiling is total dough; the flour limit is 1.3 kg, which buyers often miss.
- The neck release button is fiddly.
- Cleaning is the recurring weak point: base openings trap flour and the wire whisk is not dishwasher safe.
- Smeg documents a two-year warranty for the EU and UK, but no US term was found; confirm it before buying.
- No exact-model US owner failure history was found, so durability is undocumented either way.

Motor and capacity
SMF05RDUS is a 5-quart tilt-head with a direct-drive motor rated 750 W for the US on 120 V at 60 Hz. Smeg’s own numbers are the most useful buying guide: 2.1 kg of total bread, pizza or pasta dough, with the flour capped at 1.3 kg and hydration at no less than 55%; 2 kg of cake dough; 800 g of egg pasta dough; 2.8 kg of dessert dough; 2 to 12 egg whites; and 3.4 to 34 oz of whipped cream. A buyer who reads 2.1 kg as flour weight will over-buy the machine. UK, EU and Australian pages for the same SMF05 name plate list 1000 W, so the US figure should not be generalized.
Build and counter space
The stability story is a weighted base with a counter-weighted arm that Smeg calls Steady-Mix, which T3 credits with making the redesigned machine sturdier and keeping it from walking at top speed. It is also a 21 lb machine measuring 16 in across, so it occupies counter space permanently. T3 describes the SMF05 as a redesign of the 2010 original with a new motor, softer lines and pastel finishes.
What the tests show
Independent instrumented data for this exact US model is thin. Consumer Reports runs the Forte SMF05 in its mixers lab program, but the results are paywalled, so no measured figure is claimed here. The substantive evidence is recipe-based: King Arthur Baking reports the mixer handled double batches of whole wheat bread, thick cookies, ciabatta dough and whipped Italian buttercream, crediting the Steady-Mix system for stability and a controlled head lift. BBC Good Food’s 2026 round-up gives the UK SMF05 five stars for mixing speed and consistency, and names the fiddly neck-release button and the high price as its drawbacks. Most US-labelled independent Smeg mixer reviews, including Tom’s Guide’s, test the older SMF03, which is a different 600 W machine.
Parts and repairability
The parts situation is the strongest ownership argument. Smeg sells the wire whisk (SMWW04), the flex-edge beater (SMFB14), the dough hook (SMDH04), the flat beater (SMFB04) and a replacement 5 qt stainless bowl (SMB404) as separate items, and the front hub accepts an optional pasta roller, fettuccine and tagliolini makers, a spaghetti maker, a three-piece pasta set, an ice-cream maker with a second bowl, a multi-food grinder and a vegetable slicer. Whether the gear head, motor, control board or switch are available as service parts was not established.
Maintenance and warranty
Smeg’s US page flags the flex-edge beater, flat beater, dough hook, bowl and pouring shield as dishwasher safe and does not flag the wire whisk. The sibling SMF03 review’s advice about clearing the speed-control groove and base openings with the machine unplugged applies to the same body design. Warranty length is the least settled item for a US buyer: two years is documented for the EU and UK, but no US-specific term was found, so read the warranty certificate before buying.
Which model this is
This is the Smeg Forte Stand Mixer, 5 Qt, red, product code SMF05RDUS, one of the US colorways in the SMF05 family. It is not the older SMF03 retro-style machine, which is lighter and rated differently, and it is not the SMF04 Classico. The Amazon listing for this model is ASIN B0GSCLP2XV.
Is it worth it?
At roughly the same money as the segment default, the Smeg is a design-and-stability buy: a heavier die-cast aluminum body, a weighted base and documented genuine spare parts. Pay much more than that and the purchase rests on styling, because the dough ceiling is unchanged. If you routinely knead more than 1.3 kg of flour per batch or need proven long-term service documentation, a larger bowl-lift mixer suits you better.
