Summary
A 15 A worm drive circular saw that SKIL says is the lightest it sells at 11.5 lb, aimed at framers and carpenters who want worm drive torque without the weight penalty. Check the warranty before you buy: SKIL’s own page says one year, while one retailer lists five.
Strengths
- Lightest worm drive SKIL sells, with a claimed 11.5 lb weight and magnesium foot and gear housing.
- Full published spec block across four dealers: 15 A, 53° bevel, 2-3/8 in. capacity at 90°, 8 ft cord.
- SKIL’s product page confirms the -01 and -72 are the same saw with different bundled blades.
- Cut-Ready depth-of-cut system and anti-snag lower guard.
- Replacement blades are available from SKIL: 24-tooth at $6.99 and 40-tooth at $12.99.
Weaknesses
- The 11.5 lb weight excludes blade, cord and wrench, so real carrying weight is higher by an unmeasured amount.
- No dust blower and no electric motor brake, both spec-level omissions for a worm drive saw.
- SKIL’s spec table lists the arbor as “Diamond” — a data error that contradicts the 5/8 in. arbor published for the sibling.
- Warranty is contradictory: SKIL says one year, Acme Tools lists five, and the manual could not be checked because skil.com blocked automated access.
- No independent instrumented test of this exact model was found, and no owner thread specific to it surfaced.
- SKIL’s own page showed the configuration as sold out at the time of checking.

Full research notes and sources
Weight and magnesium construction
SKIL states 11.5 lb and calls this the lightest worm drive it sells, 4 lb less than the SHD77 predecessor. The magnesium gear housing and die-cast magnesium foot are the weight-saving choices. SKIL’s own feature text qualifies the 11.5 lb figure as excluding blade, cord and wrench, so a buyer comparing it against other saws’ ready-to-use weights may be comparing unlike numbers. Dealer copy adds that the magnesium housing keeps the motor cooler and that the Dual-Field motor has dual copper coils for cooler operation. None of the thermal or durability claims are backed by measurement in any source found.
Warranty and documentation
SKIL’s product page for this model exposes manuals and parts links, and the company sells at least two exact-fit replacement blades for this listing. But the warranty wording is inconsistent: SKIL’s own page states a 180-day money-back guarantee plus a one-year limited warranty, while Acme Tools’ structured data lists a 5-year warranty. skil.com repeatedly returned HTTP 429 during this research, so the manual and warranty page could not be checked to settle the conflict. Treat the one-year figure as the manufacturer’s stated coverage until the manual confirms otherwise.
Is it worth it?
At $219.99 from SKIL direct and Ace Tool Group, and $219.00 from US Tool & Fastener, the saw sits at a premium of roughly $20 over the aluminum-foot sibling SPT77W-01, which dealers list at $199.00 to $199.95. That premium buys magnesium in the gear housing and foot and the claimed 11.5 lb weight. Without test data showing the magnesium version is measurably lighter in use or holds cut speed better, the extra cost is a judgement call about weight, not a documented performance gain. The -72 configuration at $249.99 substitutes a 24-tooth Diablo blade; SKIL’s own product-page answer says the two kits are the same saw, so choose based on the blade you would have bought anyway. Above $250, the saw is hard to justify without independent test evidence.
Which model this is
This page covers the SKILSAW SPT77WML-01, sold by SKIL as the 7-1/4 in. Lightweight Worm Drive Skilsaw. The same product page carries an SPT77WML-72 configuration with a Diablo blade; SKIL answers a buyer question that both configurations have the same worm drive saw and differ only in accessories. The UPC is 039725035738. Do not confuse it with the SPT77W-01 (aluminum/steel foot, 20-1/2 in. long), the SPT77WM-22 (a Home Depot SKU for the magnesium saw with a Diablo blade), or the SHD77 predecessor.
The Amazon listing for this model is ASIN B00B7EUS46.
