Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A 20V brushless 7-1/4-inch sidewinder for serious DIYers and prosumers, lightest in its 12-saw test group with perfect sight lines and a track-ready shoe. Check your cutting load before you buy: it was slowest in the group on full-depth four-sheet rips and smoked during bevel cuts in one test.

Strengths

  • Lightest bare tool in the 12-saw head-to-head at 7.05 lb, with a perfect 6 of 6 sight-line score.
  • Track-ready cast aluminum shoe converts it into an affordable track saw with the CRT0702 guide.
  • 2-5/8 in cut depth matches or beats most rivals in the test group.
  • 5-year warranty with registration plus a 13-part replaceable parts list.
  • Excellent value at the bare-tool price for a serious DIYer.

Weaknesses

  • Slowest of 12 on full-depth four-sheet OSB rips at 28.05 s, though it completed the cut.
  • Bevel cuts ran slow, with smoke observed during one bevel cut in testing.
  • Blade guard scored 2/3 on compound cuts and can hang up on right compound cuts.
  • Overload protection stopped the saw after 6.5 in in a demanding full-depth test.
  • Shoe friction rated mid-pack at 2/3.
  • Value depends on already owning PWR CORE 20 batteries; otherwise budget for battery and charger.

Cutting performance

It ripped two layers of 3/4 in OSB in 16.70 s (9th place) and finished a full-depth four-layer rip in 28.05 s, last in the group but without stalling. Crosscuts at 90° and 45° bevel completed without guard issues. In standalone testing it ripped two sheets of 3/4 in OSB in 21.66 s (6th of 14) and moved 6.5 in before overload protection shut it down in a four-sheet full-depth test (12th of 14). Sight lines scored 4.7 (3rd place) and blade guard 4.3 (2nd place).

Weight and handling

The saw is compact at 13-5/8 × 6-27/32 × 11-1/16 in, with a folding rafter hook and an LED work light. The lower guard’s 2/3 score on compound cuts and mid-pack shoe friction are the handling limits.

Warranty, parts and upkeep

SKIL covers 20V cordless handheld power tools for 3 years of consumer use, extendable to 5 years with registration within 30 days of purchase; batteries and chargers carry 2 years, and commercial or professional use limits coverage to 90 days. The manual lists 13 replaceable assemblies, including the lower guard set, spring, base plate set and handle assembly. Keep the blade, guards and shoe clean, check lower guard operation, and use only 7-1/4 in blades rated 5,300 RPM or higher; disconnect the battery before service. No recall affects this saw; the only SKIL recall found is for a 40V 5.0Ah battery (BY8708-00).

Is it worth it?

At $139 bare or up to $170 for a kit, the CR5440B is strong value for a serious DIYer: light weight, perfect sight lines, a track-ready shoe, large cut depth and a 5-year warranty with registration. Between $170 and $200 for a kit, value is only fair; Ryobi’s HP Brushless PBLCS302 scored 88 points at $199 and cut faster. Above $200, professional saws from Milwaukee, Makita or DeWalt deliver measurably faster cutting and better guard action. SKIL lists the saw-only CR5440B-1C at $139.99 and kit variants at $169.99, with Global Industrial listing $169.00 clearance (was $189.95); the track guide CRT0702 is $89.99, replacement 24T blades $6.99 and 40T blades $12.99, and batteries $44.99 for 2.0Ah, $79.99 for 4.0Ah and $89.99 for 5.0Ah (SKIL, 2026). The 350-cuts-in-2x4-pine claim uses a separately sold 5.0Ah battery, not the 4.0Ah kit battery.
