Summary

A compact 12V brushless drill/driver kit that Consumer Reports found fast and very powerful for its class. Confirm the generation before you buy: the DL529002 has been succeeded by the shorter, cheaper DL6290A.

Strengths

  • Very powerful for its class; Consumer Reports said it drives even the largest screws.
  • Compact 7-1/8-inch body for overhead and tight-space work.
  • Brushless motor with a two-speed gearbox.
  • The 2.0Ah battery has a USB port for charging phones and other devices.
  • Five-year warranty coverage if you register within 30 days.
  • Kit comes complete: battery, charger, bit and belt clip.

Weaknesses

  • A Lowe’s owner reports trigger issues after 4 years of use.
  • Independent testing beyond Consumer Reports lab results is thin.
  • A Reddit r/BuyItForLife poster advises avoiding SKIL tools based on personal experience.
  • The PWR JUMP 5-minute charge claim is marketing, not independently tested.
  • CR called run time only moderately long; big jobs may need a second battery.
  • SKIL’s warranty excludes normal wear and tear and negligence.

Performance and testing

Consumer Reports lab-tested this exact model: fast at drilling holes and driving screws, very powerful and capable of driving even the largest screws, with moderately long run time per battery charge and batteries that may need changing during a large job. CR’s scored sub-scores are paywalled, and it listed the drill at $80 while noting this model may have limited distribution.

ProToolReviews did not test the DL529002 directly; it reviewed the successor DL6290A, which shares the same motor platform and torque rating. PTR found that platform confident across a full range of twist bits, with a 1-inch spade or auger bit about the comfortable limit and 1.5-inch self-feed bits making it work hard. Treat that as context for the platform, not a measurement of this drill.

Battery, charging and kit

The kit’s 2.0Ah PWR CORE 12 battery works across SKIL’s 12V tool lineup, so it shares batteries with other PWR CORE 12 tools. Its USB port (PWR ASSIST) can charge a phone — a distinguishing feature of this generation that retailer listings do not always highlight. SKIL claims the included PWR JUMP charger takes a 2.0Ah battery to 25% in 5 minutes and 100% in 45 minutes; no independent test confirms that, so treat the numbers as marketing until proven.

CR’s moderately long run time verdict is the realistic expectation: plan around one battery for modest jobs and keep a spare handy for big ones.

Warranty, parts and running costs

SKIL’s warranty policy page states a 3-year consumer warranty on the tool, extendable to 5 years if you register within 30 days of purchase; batteries and chargers carry 2-year coverage. The product page’s “5 Year Limited Warranty” reflects the registered maximum. SKIL publishes a parts list for this model, shared with the DL529001 and DL529003.

Ownership costs stay modest: SKIL lists replacement 2.0Ah batteries at $29.99, 4.0Ah at $49.99, and a replacement PWR JUMP charger at $64.99 (checked October 2026).

Durability is the open question. A Lowe’s owner reports trigger trouble after 4 years, and a Reddit r/BuyItForLife poster recommends avoiding SKIL tools outright; others in r/Tools and r/woodworking call the 12V line well priced with good parts and build. Nobody has published a failure rate for this model, so weigh the trigger report as a real risk rather than a settled defect.

Is it worth it?

At $70 or less it is a strong buy: brushless power, 350 in-lbs, compact size, USB-charging battery and 5-year registered coverage. From $71 to $90 it remains good value for homeowners and DIYers. Between $91 and $110 it is fair; above $110 it is weak unless you specifically need the PWR CORE 12 battery ecosystem.

Watch the competition: ProToolReviews noted the successor DL6290A kit at $69.99, about an inch shorter with the same torque and speed range. SKIL’s own site showed this kit at $99.99, sold out when checked in October 2026. Consumer Reports listed it at $80 and flagged limited distribution, so shop around before paying full price.

Which model this is

This page covers the SKIL PWR CORE 12 brushless 12V drill driver kit, model DL529002, sold as “Drill w/ Battery & PWR JUMP Charger” and confirmed in SKIL’s 2021 catalog as the kit with PWR JUMP charger. The US Amazon variant is ASIN B07F23NMFM. Do not confuse it with the newer DL6290A compact drill, which is the successor, or with the 20V DL529302.
