Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A 10.1-inch Android control panel for people already running Shelly hardware, with a built-in 5 A relay so it can switch a lighting circuit as well as run your automations. Check your wall box before you buy: it needs a 100–240 V mains feed behind it and a qualified electrician for the wiring.

Strengths

  • The built-in 5 A relay means the panel can switch a lighting circuit instead of only mirroring switches.
  • A 10.1-inch touch panel lives in the wall, not on a counter next to your phone.
  • Light and motion sensors are on board, so automations can react to the room.
  • The local web interface works with no subscription attached.
  • Current radio hardware: Wi-Fi 6 on both bands plus Bluetooth 5.4.

Weaknesses

  • The product copy promises HVAC adjustment by temperature and humidity, but the device carries no temperature or humidity sensor.
  • The firmware has no scripting support, so logic runs on schedules, webhooks and MQTT only.
  • The warranty tier for this unit is 2 years, and no spare parts or service documentation were found.
  • Long-term reliability is undocumented: nobody has published a failure rate for this model.
  • Power it over USB-C and it cannot switch anything at all.

The relay and what it can switch

The single output switches 240 V~ at up to 5 A, and Shelly puts the connected load at up to 1500 W. Read that as a switching maximum. Resistive, capacitive and inductive loads are all listed as supported, but no derating table was published, so the harder load types are yours to work out before you connect them.

The under-15 W figure is the panel’s own draw, not what the switched load burns, and the two get confused easily. Feed the display from mains and the relay does its job. Power it over USB-C and it cannot control a switching circuit at all.

Sensors, buttons and software limits

The panel carries a light sensor, a motion sensor with up to 1 m of range, and a four-microphone line array. It has no temperature, humidity or G-sensor, which matters because the product page advertises HVAC adjustment based on temperature and humidity; on this hardware that needs external sensors you supply.

The firmware offers 20 schedules, 20 webhooks with 5 URLs each and MQTT, but no scripting, so complicated logic has to live on your own server or in the Shelly app. There are 4 customizable push buttons and 1 screen on/off button, plus 1 switch/button input on a screw terminal if you want an external switch on the wall.

Installation

It mounts in a standard wall box. The US version comes with a power base that suits US dry-wall boxes, while EU units differ in the power base and keep the same 100–240 V electrical spec.

Shelly requires the wiring to be done by a qualified electrician, with the circuit breakers off and a cable protection device fitted. The terminal block takes 18 to 14 AWG conductors, wants 0.4 Nm of torque and 6 to 15 mm of stripped length. The documentation mentions a mounting plate and two supplied screws for the display, and no complete in-box accessory list was published. The unit itself is 920 g of glass, coated PC and stamped metal.

Is it worth it?

Shelly Europe lists the black variant at EUR 372.90 (2026-10). No US retail price surfaced in the research, so work out the local price before you commit.

Running costs are small: under 15 W of panel draw, no consumables, and the local web interface needs no subscription, though the product page references optional Shelly Smart Control Premium features. Against that sits a 2-year warranty tier, no spare parts or service manual, and no independent instrumented test or owner thread to judge the thing by. Nobody has run this panel through a day of real use in public, so you are buying the manufacturer’s word on how it holds up.

Which model this is

This page covers the Shelly Wall Display XL, the 10.1-inch panel, in the black shell. Manufacturer SKUs are FG3800238073008 for black and FG3800238071691 for grey, and whether the two differ beyond shell colour is unconfirmed. The black US Amazon listing is ASIN B0FPG8CNSZ. Do not confuse it with the smaller Shelly Wall Display or with the X1i, X2 and X2i, which are separate units.
