Shelly Wall Display XL Black: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-21
Summary
What is documented is a set of design limits — no temperature or humidity sensor behind the advertised HVAC control, no scripting in the firmware, and a relay rating with no derating table. Running costs are small at under 15 W of panel draw with no consumables and no subscription for the local web interface, and at EUR 372.90 (Shelly Europe, 2026-10) it is a premium buy only if you want a large Android control surface with a relay in the wall.
Common problems and fixes
- HVAC control advertised without a sensor to drive it — the product page advertises HVAC adjustment based on temperature and humidity, but the specification lists no internal temperature, ambient temperature, humidity or G-sensor, so that control needs external sensors you supply. There are no owner reports for the exact model to judge how it behaves in practice. The documented coverage for this unit is the 2-year warranty tier. [1][2]
- No scripting support in the firmware — the capability list gives 20 schedules, 20 webhooks with 5 URLs per hook and MQTT, but scripting is not supported, so any complicated logic has to live on your own server or in the app. Workaround: drive the panel with webhooks or MQTT. [2][3]
- USB power kills the switching function — powered over USB-C the panel cannot control a switching circuit at all, even though the USB-C port takes 5 V / 3 A and offers 5 V / 0.5 A output. Workaround: feed the display from the mains supply, not from USB. [2][3]
- Two-year warranty tier, and the maker’s own terms contradict each other — the product page advertises “2 to 5 years warranty” while also setting out tiered terms of 3 years for Plus/Wave/Gen3/Gen4, 5 years for Pro/Wave Pro and 2 years for all other devices, and this panel falls in the last group. Workaround: get the terms confirmed in writing before you buy. Manufacturer support: support@shelly.cloud, +359 2 988 7435. [1][3]
- No spare parts, no service manual, no repair route — no spare parts, service manual or repair documentation were found for this model, and no failure-rate data exists. There is no owner-side fix: a failed relay or display means maker service or a unit swap. [3][5]
- Wiring needs a qualified electrician — the safety guide requires installation by a qualified electrician, circuit breakers off during installation and a cable protection device on the circuit; the screw terminal block takes 18 to 14 AWG conductors at up to 0.4 Nm torque with 6 to 15 mm stripped length. Workaround: budget for professional installation rather than a weekend job. [3]
- Short motion sensor range, adequacy unknown — the motion sensor is documented with a range of up to 1 m, and whether that covers the intended mounting height is an open question in the sources. No owner feedback exists to settle it, so a separate motion sensor is the safe answer for a room-scale trigger. [2][3]
Parts and consumables
No replaceable parts or consumables reported. Nothing in the documentation is sold as a spare: the installation guide refers to a mounting plate and two supplied screws for securing the display, and no spare parts, service manual or repair documentation were found for this model. [3][5]
Yearly running cost
Electricity is the only recurring cost: the panel draws under 15 W on its own power supply, computed as that draw multiplied by the hours it stays powered at your local electricity rate. There are no consumables, and the local web interface needs no subscription. The optional Shelly Smart Control Premium features referenced on the product page are not priced in the sources, so any subscription cost is unverified. [1][2][3][4]
When it is a good buy
At that level the panel is a premium device, and the case for it rests on the combination of a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a built-in relay and an Android interface, weighed against a 2-year warranty tier and the absence of any independent testing. [1][5]
