Summary
A guided fixed-angle sharpening system for straight-edge knives: the blade clamps to a rotary beam that flips 180° so both bevels take the same angle, set on a printed scale rather than by hand. The kit runs from 220-grit diamond repair to a 6000-grit whetstone and leather strop, but there is no independent test of this model, so you are trusting SHARPAL’s own manual and specs.
Strengths
- Both bevels are ground at one set angle, so results repeat without freehand judgement.
- The 220-to-6000 grit progression covers edge repair, sharpening and mirror polish in one case.
- The manual documents angle scales by blade width, a marker method for large blades and a 10° gauge correction.
- Exact-model refills are cheap and sold by grit, running $11.99 to $29.99 a set (SHARPAL, 2026).
- A 3-year warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship.
- The clamps hold blades up to 7 mm thick and 560 mm long.
Weaknesses
- No independent test of the 202H exists, so edge quality, plate life and flip durability are unmeasured.
- The only owner comments found are four five-star reviews hosted on SHARPAL’s own page, which is not independent evidence.
- Wide blades are capped at 30° per side, and blades over 110 mm need a marker method rather than the printed scale.
- The 6000-grit whetstone must be kept wet, and new diamond plates need a break-in period.
- The unit weighs 9 lb (4.1 kg), and the retailer ships it oversize with no free shipping.
- At the $179.99 MSRP the value is hard to justify without a deeper owner history.

Angles and setup
The 202H sets the angle for you: the knife is clamped on a rotary beam that flips 180° so both sides meet the abrasive at the same angle, and you read the angle off a printed scale instead of holding a steady hand. The headline range is 10°–35° per side, but that applies only to standard blades 15–70 mm wide on the A scale. Wide blades 70–110 mm wide use the B scale and cap at 30° per side, and anything wider than 110 mm has no reference distance at all, so you fall back to a marker method. Set the clamp the right distance from the edge: 1/2 in (12.7 mm) for the A scale, 2 in (50.8 mm) for the B scale. If you use a digital angle gauge, add 10° when it is zeroed on the base and no correction when it is zeroed on the blade face. Off-center clamping does not change the angle.
What is in the kit and how you use it
Seven 1" × 6" (25 × 150 mm) plates carry you from 220-grit diamond for edge repair through 325, 600 and 1000 grit, then a 3000-grit ceramic stage, a 6000-grit soak-free whetstone and a smooth leather strop for polish. Diamond plates run dry; the ceramic stage runs dry or with a little water; the 6000-grit whetstone stays wet; the strop stays dry. Use spine-leading, edge-trailing strokes only, and always move the leather downward, because back-and-forth stropping cuts it. New diamond plates feel aggressive for the first several uses and then settle; that is break-in, not wear. The manual adds the usual safety basics: goggles, cut-resistant gloves and masking tape on the clamps to protect the blade.
Refills, warranty and upkeep
The 202H is repairable in a way many sharpeners are not: SHARPAL sells exact-model refills for the plates, whetstones, strop and clamps, with the refill sets running $11.99 to $29.99 (SHARPAL, 2026). Grit-matched extras exist too, such as 80/325 extra-coarse diamond plates at $24.99 and resin-bonded 3000/6000 plates at $39.99 each. Routine upkeep is a small brush on the knife and plate after sharpening, a soft dry cloth over the components, and dry storage away from heat and damp; the kit lives in its plastic carry case. The warranty runs three years from purchase against defects in materials and workmanship, but it excludes misuse, normal wear and the natural decline of consumables, and it is valid only for non-industrial use. SHARPAL also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee and free US shipping on orders over $30, while Chicago Knife Works gives a 60-day return window on its own sales.
What owners say
Independent owner discussion is hard to find. The only owner comments located are four five-star reviews on SHARPAL’s own product page, praising simple assembly, easy use, build quality and responsive customer service for direct orders. Those reviews are manufacturer-hosted and self-selected, so treat them as signals rather than evidence. Performance claims such as hair-whittling sharpness and a mirror-polished finish come from the manufacturer’s copy, not from measurements. No recurring complaint pattern was found either; knife-forum issues common to guided systems, like clamp marks or loosening knobs, are not documented for this model, so reliability is simply unverified.
Is it worth it?
Value here hinges on the price you pay and how much you trust first-party documentation. Chicago Knife Works lists the exact kit (SKU SHP202H) at $125.99 against a $179.99 MSRP, in stock, with a 60-day return window. At that sale price the package is defensible: guided angles, a full 220-to-6000 progression, a 3-year warranty and cheap refills. At the $179.99 MSRP, where SHARPAL’s own page shows the kit sold out, the missing independent evidence makes it a harder sell against guided systems with longer owner histories. Above $180 it is weak unless the flip mechanism, the A/B scales and the grit spread match a concrete need. One wording discrepancy is worth knowing: the retailer calls the 3000-grit stage a whetstone while the manufacturer calls it a ceramic plate.
