Summary

The Freestyle+ is Samsung’s 2026 third-generation portable projector, a 0.8 kg 1080p DLP cylinder with a claimed 430 ISO lumens, AI auto-setup and Tizen. It is dim even in a dark room by independent measurement, so buy it for the point-at-anything setup and the Samsung ecosystem, not the picture.

Strengths

  • The AI OptiScreen suite projects a clean rectangle onto curtains, corners and coloured walls.
  • It weighs 800 g and rotates 180 degrees, so it points at any surface.
  • Q-Symphony pairs it with a Samsung soundbar for better audio.
  • Tizen, AirPlay and the Samsung app ecosystem are all built in.
  • Out-of-the-box colour accuracy is very good, and the fan is quiet.
  • Brightness is uniform across the screen.

Weaknesses

  • RTINGS found it dim even in a pitch-black room, with washed-out, low-contrast images.
  • There is no built-in battery; on Samsung’s own battery base it drops to about 80% brightness.
  • There are no mounting holes, no lens shift and no confirmed optical zoom.
  • Video is 60 Hz only with no VRR and high input lag in gaming mode.
  • The Battery Base costs $202.95 if you want cordless use.
  • One owner reported both units of a two-unit purchase arriving with stuck pixels.

Setup and AI features

Setup automation is the standout strength. The Freestyle+ adds a 3D auto keystone that corrects vertical and horizontal distortion, real-time focus, screen fit, obstacle avoidance and wall calibration, and hands-on coverage at CES 2026 showed it projecting a clean image onto curtains and coloured walls. It keeps the 180-degree cradle from earlier models, so it can throw at a wall or a ceiling, and it weighs 800 g. The catch is that the newer software runs on the same 1080p, 60 Hz light engine as before.

Picture quality

It found poor contrast with dark scenes washed out, an image that “looks dim, even in a pitch-black room”, mediocre colour volume and a noticeable rainbow effect, with no judder removal from any source. The strengths it recorded are specific: very good out-of-the-box colour accuracy, uniform brightness and a quiet fan. Compared with the XGIMI Vibe One, the Samsung is a bit brighter and more colour-accurate, while the XGIMI has much deeper blacks and a motorised zoom.

Portability, battery and gaming

There is no internal battery, so the projector is tied to an outlet or a compatible USB-C power pack rated 50 W / 20 V or above, and on Samsung’s own Freestyle Battery it operates at about 80% brightness. The dedicated Battery Base is rated for up to 3 hours and listed at $202.95 on Samsung’s parts store. Video is limited to 1080p at 60 Hz with no VRR, and RTINGS measured high input lag in gaming mode, so the Gaming Hub feature set does not make it a good gaming projector. There are also no mounting holes, no lens shift and no optical zoom, so framing means moving the unit.

The value math is the weak point. Samsung launched it at $1,199.99 in July 2026 and had it at $949.99 with instant savings at the October check; deal coverage reported about $948 in early October, and the UK price moved from £999 to £849 with a £100 cashback promotion. For similar money, reviewers pointed to a brighter portable rated at 1,600 ISO lumens for $799. One owner’s two-unit stuck-pixel report is a small sample, but a reminder to buy with a solid return window. Around or below $700 the automation and ecosystem make a defensible dark-room purchase; at $950 and above it loses on measured picture quality.
