Summary

Samsung’s 2025 flagship Android smartwatch, the 40mm Galaxy Watch 8, pairs a 3,000-nit screen and Google Gemini with a broad health sensor set that leans on the Samsung ecosystem. The catch is battery life: plan on charging it most days if you leave the always-on display on.

Strengths

  • The 3,000-nit display stays readable in direct sunlight.
  • Thinner and lighter than the Watch 7, so it sits comfortably through the day.
  • Google Gemini handles voice requests fast and is a clear step up from Bixby.
  • Heart rate tracked within 5 bpm of an Apple Watch Ultra 2 during workouts.
  • Dual-frequency GPS logged runs and walks precisely.
  • Sleep tracking ran without the data gaps owners saw on the Watch 7.

Weaknesses

  • Battery life needs a daily charge with the always-on display enabled.
  • The AI Running Coach misjudged fitness, labeling a 20-year runner a beginner.
  • The proprietary band lug system rules out cheap third-party straps.
  • Some health and AI features need a paired Samsung Galaxy phone, not just any Android.
  • The box has no wall adapter, only a USB-C charging cable.
  • The band-release buttons are hard to press with short nails.

Battery life and charging

Battery life is the watch’s main tradeoff. PCMag measured 26 hours with always-on display on and 39 hours with it off, against Samsung’s 30 and 40-hour claims, and CNET averaged about 30 hours with all features on. Recharge is quick: PCMag filled the battery from 5% in about 64 minutes, and CNET put it at about an hour. In practice that means a nightly charge if you keep the display always on and log workouts.

Running Coach and the health sensors

Samsung’s AI Running Coach was the most criticized feature. The Antioxidant Index scored low in CNET’s testing and requires taking the watch off and holding a thumb on the sensor for several seconds, so its day-to-day utility is unproven. The BioActive sensor does cover optical heart rate, ECG and body-composition readings, and dual-frequency GPS tracked runs and walks without the odd discrepancies seen on the Watch 7.

Design and the phone apps

The squircle frame is polarizing: it is thinner and more comfortable than the Watch 7, but the screen sits more exposed without a bezel to protect it. The proprietary lug system keeps the sensors closer to your wrist, at the cost of third-party strap options. Full functionality needs three separate apps on your phone, and the band-release buttons are fiddly enough that a paperclip helps when swapping straps.

Is it worth it?

At its $349.99 launch price the 40mm model competes with the Google Pixel Watch 3 at $349 and the Apple Watch Series 10 at $399. PCMag and CNET both gave it Editors’ Choice, but Wirecutter does not recommend it and names the Google Pixel Watch 4 as its top Android pick, citing better battery life and a repairable design. The Galaxy Watch 8 Classic (46mm) has fallen to $270 at Woot (July 2026), down from a $550 original price, which shows how fast the line discounts. There are no recurring costs beyond optional bands and charging accessories.
