Samsung Portable SSD T9 1TB: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-19
Summary
There are no consumables and no user-serviceable parts, so yearly running cost is $0 beyond the drive itself. It is a good buy at or under about $120 if your computer has a 20Gbps port.
Common problems and fixes
- Write-speed collapse after the cache fills on the 1TB — the 1TB model’s TurboWrite SLC cache is only about 22GB (88GB on 2TB, 180GB on 4TB), so sustained writes larger than that slow sharply; one r/UsbCHardware report describes a T9 dropping to 15 MB/s. TechRadar’s advice: if you write large files to the T9, get the 4TB model. [21][25]
- Random disconnects on some USB-C 20Gbps ports — reported on a desktop 20Gbps port (Samsung Community), on an HP Pro Mini 400 G9 front 20Gbps port where it dropped every 10-60 seconds until moved to a rear 10Gbps port, and on a 2TB unit on r/techsupport. These look host- and port-specific rather than a drive defect; no failure rate has been published. Fix: switch ports and use the included cables — Samsung warns non-genuine cables can stop the drive being recognized. [15][18][16]
- Heat during sustained transfers — PCWorld found the drive warm but “in no way uncomfortable to touch”, Mac owners on r/mac report it “awfully warm” even at idle, while ZDNet’s 2025 testing found “very little heat, even under heavy workloads”; the evidence conflicts and is probably workload-dependent. Samsung’s Dynamic Thermal Guard throttles the drive to hold surface temperature down. [10][17][23]
- Samsung Magician software friction — Magician is Windows/macOS/Android only, is required to manage the AES 256-bit encryption, was missing at launch, and Magician 7.0 did not recognize the T9. Keep firmware updated through Magician and treat the software as a requirement, not an extra. [21]
Parts and consumables
- USB-C to C / USB-C to A cables (included) — about 0.45 m each and in the box; no owners report a replacement interval, but a 20Gbps-capable cable is required for full speed and replacements are optional if lost. [28][3]
- USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 expansion card (optional) — for PCs lacking a 20Gbps port, flagged by PCMag as a possible extra cost. [9]
Yearly running cost
$0 in consumables: the drive is bus-powered (as little as 2.5W at 5V/0.5A), there is no subscription, and nothing is replaced over time. The only possible one-off extras are a replacement 20Gbps cable or a 20Gbps expansion card for PCs that lack the port. [3][9]
When it is a good buy
Price points reported by the manufacturer and reviewers: Samsung’s US store listed the 1TB at $119.99 in October 2026, marked down from its $139.99 launch price in October 2023 (2TB $239.99, 4TB $439.99 at launch); ZDNet in December 2025 saw 1TB-4TB ranging $139-$399. [1][4][23]
- At or under $120: strong value — undercuts much of the 20Gbps competition, provided you have (or plan to add) a 20Gbps port. [1]
- $121-150: fair — still competitive, but if your machine only has 10Gbps USB, weigh whether the T7 or T7 Shield meets your real speed needs for much less. [1]
- Above $150: weak for the 1TB — the Crucial X10 Pro is faster in most tests and the SanDisk Extreme Pro V2 is a strong alternative; above $200 consider the 2TB or 4TB T9 instead. [10][11]
