Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A rugged USB-C portable SSD for people who move large files and need the drive to survive drops, dust and water jets. Check your heat and speed expectations first: it runs warm under sustained writes and its 10 Gbps interface caps throughput.

Strengths

  • Rated 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write over USB 3.2 Gen 2, near the interface ceiling.
  • Both USB-C-to-C and USB-C-to-A cables in the box, so it works with older ports.
  • Hardware 256-bit AES encryption with password protection through Samsung’s software.
  • Compact at 59 × 88 × 13 mm and 98 g, small enough for a pocket.
  • Three-year limited warranty covers manufacturing defects.

Weaknesses

  • Runs warm under sustained writes; the rubber shell traps heat.
  • Sequential throughput is capped by the 10 Gbps interface, so Thunderbolt and USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 drives are faster.
  • Performance throttles after roughly 20 GB of continuous writes on the 1TB model.
  • Some early review units had a USB-C connector fit problem, which Samsung said was fixed.
  • The three-year warranty is short next to five-year coverage from SanDisk, WD and Kingston.

Speed and the write cache

Independent tests put the 1TB model near its rated speeds. Digital Trends measured about 855 MB/s read and 835 MB/s write, while SSD-Tester recorded 1,085 MB/s read and 1,049 MB/s write before the drive throttled after roughly 20 GB of writes. Samsung says the 1TB model holds above 900 MB/s sequential write and the 2TB holds 1,000 MB/s at 25°C ambient. Tom’s Hardware found the 10 Gbps interface is the ceiling, so Thunderbolt and USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 drives post higher numbers. Real-world compressed-file transfers from an internal M.2 SSD landed around 650 MB/s.

Heat, durability and the rubber shell

The T7 was already prone to get hot, and Digital Trends says the Shield’s rubber shell makes it worse. Tom’s Hardware devotes its sustained-write testing to cache and temperature behaviour. The shell is not removable; it is an aluminum frame under a corrugated rubberized sleeve. Drop and liquid damage is not covered under warranty.

Warranty, repairs and data safety

Samsung backs the drive with a three-year limited warranty. Damage from drops, liquid or dust is not covered, and opening the case or removing labels voids the warranty; repairs go through Samsung service centers. The drive is not user-serviceable, and Samsung disclaims liability for data loss. If you forget the password, a PSID revert through a Samsung Service Center or Magician erases all data. Routine care is limited to keeping the drive and cables dry and using Samsung’s software for firmware and health checks. No subscription is required; the optional Samsung Portable SSD Software and Magician handle encryption and updates.

Is it worth it?

At or below its $159.99 launch MSRP for 1TB (Samsung, April 2022) it is a defensible buy for field and travel use. For maximum speed, the 10 Gbps interface is the limit, and faster drives exist. PCMag’s review page showed a $109 Best Buy price (2026), though that is a dynamic retailer figure.

Which model this is

This page covers the Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield, 1TB, model family MU-PE1T0, in the US black part number MU-PE1T0S/AM. It comes in black, blue and beige finishes. Do not confuse it with the base T7, the T7 Touch, or the newer T9 and T705 families; the Shield is the rugged variant of the T7 line.
