Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A compact USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) external NVMe SSD for moving documents, photos and video projects between USB-C and USB-A computers, with optional AES-256 password protection. Check your host ports first: a 5 Gbps port caps it well below the rated 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write.

Strengths

  • Independent testing measured 894 MB/s read and 840 MB/s write in Blackmagic, and about 1 GB/s read with 920 MB/s write in a four-thread 2 MB IOMeter test (2 TB sample).
  • Compact metal housing with no moving parts, powered from the host USB port.
  • Two bundled cables cover common USB-A and USB-C hosts without an adapter.
  • Optional hardware AES-256 password protection without the T7 Touch fingerprint sensor.
  • At least one owner reports running active Final Cut Pro projects from the drive.

Weaknesses

  • Sustained writes fall once the SLC cache fills: a 2 TB test wrote about 84 GB near 867 MB/s, then about 337 MB/s steady. The 1 TB cache allowance is roughly half that, but the 1 TB model was not directly benchmarked for long writes.
  • Password loss is unrecoverable and a factory reset erases data.
  • Owners report intermittent disconnects, drives that stop mounting, and password or unlock failures; no population failure rate is published.

Speed and sustained writes

The quoted 1,050 / 1,000 MB/s is a short sequential ceiling. Real transfers of mixed small files, a 5 Gbps host, cache exhaustion and background activity all lower it. Do not read the 2 TB sustained figures as proof for this 1 TB SKU.

Reliability and owner reports

Owners describe disconnects after extended use, drives that vanish during copies, and password or mount failures. One September 2024 post concerns a 1 TB unit disconnecting during gaming; moving it to another USB port helped temporarily. A June 2026 Samsung Members post describes a T7 bought in November 2025 freezing during a game update, then rejecting a formerly working password and going read-only. Cable swaps, host changes and firmware updates are reported workarounds, but no independent root cause or failure rate is established. There is no verified recall or audited field failure percentage for MU-PC1T0T/AM.

Running costs

There are no scheduled consumables: no filter, cartridge, motor, lubricant, subscription or user-replaceable battery. The drive draws USB power from the host. The 7.5 W figure is a rated input, not a measured draw. As an illustration only: 7.5 W for 8 hours a day for 365 days is 21.9 kWh per year, or $4.38 at an assumed $0.20 per kWh; at 2 hours a day it is 5.475 kWh per year, or $1.10. Samsung excludes data recovery from the standard warranty, so a separate backup drive or cloud service is a separate purchase.

Is it worth it?

  • B&H Photo: $230.01 new direct, in stock, advertised free two-day shipping; $199.95 used.
  • Samsung US product page: $274.99, with delivery or pickup status that can show unavailable.
  • Micro Center Miami: $259.99, in-store only, low single-digit local stock.
  • Target: $312.41 for the exact model, a high-price outlier.
  • Manufacturer MSRP: $274.99; MSRP is not typical street pricing. Tom’s Hardware’s 2020 review table lists $159.99, a historical reference, not a 2026 offer.

Buying thresholds: at or below $140–$150 new and delivered it is a good buy if you specifically want the compact metal T7, two bundled USB cables and optional hardware password protection. At $151–$180 it is conditional and only from a trusted seller with straightforward returns. Above $200, generally do not buy this ordinary 1 TB T7 at the observed $230–$275 asking prices unless you have a specific Samsung software or ecosystem need. The T7 Shield 1TB adds IP65 and was listed at $287.99; the Kingston XS1000 1TB offers a five-year limited warranty but was not available on the checked B&H page.

Which model this is

This page covers the standard 2020-era Samsung Portable SSD T7 in 1 TB, Titan Gray, SKU MU-PC1T0T/AM. It is not the fingerprint-equipped T7 Touch, not the rugged T7 Shield, not the higher-bandwidth T9, and not a 20 Gbps drive. The 1 TB marketing capacity is decimal; software shows about 931 GiB before filesystem overhead.
