Samsung Portable SSD T7 1TB: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-23
Summary
Owners report intermittent disconnects, drives that stop mounting, and password or unlock failures, with no published population failure rate. Sustained writes fall once the SLC cache fills, and the ordinary T7 has no IP rating. There are no scheduled consumables; the only recurring cost is electricity, roughly $4.38 per year at a conservative 7.5 W for 8 hours a day. At observed $230–$275 asking prices it is generally not a good buy unless you need Samsung software or ecosystem.
Common problems and fixes
- Sustained-write slowdown once SLC cache fills — Tom’s Hardware’s tested 2 TB wrote about 84 GB near 867 MB/s, then about 337 MB/s steady; the author describes 84 GB as roughly twice the 1 TB model’s cache allowance, but did not directly benchmark an ordinary 1 TB T7. Larger transfers can slow substantially; exact performance varies with free space, firmware, temperature and data type. [4][5]
- Intermittent disconnects during use — a September 2024 owner reports a 1 TB unit disconnecting during gaming; moving it to another USB port helped temporarily, and firmware had been updated. The cause (port, cable, power-management, OS/filesystem, hub or SSD electronics) was not confirmed. [12]
- Drives vanishing or failing to mount — owners report T7s disappearing while copying or editing, or later ceasing to mount; a cable swap (USB-C-to-C to USB-A-to-C) stopped disconnects for one person, and Samsung requested an in-warranty return after unsuccessful format, cable and firmware experiments. Some posts concern 4 TB units, so none proves a failure rate for this 1 TB SKU. [13]
- Password or unlock failures — a June 2026 Samsung Members user who bought a T7 in November 2025 reports it froze during a game update, then rejected a formerly working password, went read-only and disappeared despite testing two supplied cable types and hosts. No Samsung-confirmed diagnosis or data-recovery outcome was supplied. [11]
- Data-recovery case — a September 2025 r/datarecovery poster describes an unresponsive T7 after file copies stalled; others recommended changing cable or host. No independent diagnosis or known root cause was established. [16]
- No password recovery — password loss is unrecoverable and a factory reset erases data. Do not store the only password copy on the protected drive. [1][2]
Parts and consumables
- No scheduled consumables — no replaceable filter, cartridge, mechanical motor, lubricant, subscription or user-removable battery; NAND has finite write endurance but no scheduled end-user part replacement is prescribed. [1][2][3]
Yearly running cost
There is no monthly plan, required replacement battery or consumable; the drive draws USB power from the computer. The 5 V, 1.5 A figure is a 7.5 W rated input, not a measured or typical draw. At a deliberately conservative hypothetical 7.5 W for 8 hours a day for 365 days, this equals 21.9 kWh per year, or $4.38 per year at an assumed $0.20 per kWh. A lighter hypothetical 2 hours a day at the same rating yields 5.475 kWh per year, or $1.10 per year. Real energy use should be lower during idle but depends on usage. Samsung excludes data recovery from the standard warranty, so a separate backup drive or cloud service is a separate purchase. No reports found for a representative model-specific yearly owner spending number. [2][3]
When it is a good buy
US prices observed October 23, 2026, exact Titan Gray 1TB MU-PC1T0T/AM, tax and location-sensitive delivery excluded: B&H Photo $230.01 new direct, in stock, advertised free two-day shipping ($199.95 used, not the same warranty as new); Samsung US product page $274.99, with delivery or pickup status that can show unavailable; Micro Center Miami $259.99, in-store only, low single-digit local stock; Target $312.41, a high-price outlier. Manufacturer MSRP $274.99; Tom’s Hardware’s 2020 review table lists $159.99, a historical release-era reference, not a 2026 offer. [7][8][9][10][4]
Buying thresholds: at or below $140–$150 new and delivered it is a good purchase if you specifically value the compact metal T7, two bundled USB cables and optional hardware password protection. At $151–$180 it is conditional, only from a trusted seller with straightforward returns. Above $200, generally do not buy this ordinary 1 TB T7 at the observed $230–$275 asking prices unless there is a specific Samsung software or ecosystem need or an unusual local shortage. The T7 Shield 1TB adds IP65 and was listed at $287.99; the Kingston XS1000 1TB offers a five-year limited warranty but was not available on the checked B&H page. [7][17][18][19]
Alternatives: Samsung T7 Shield 1TB (MU-PE1T0S/AM, black) — same 10 Gbps, up to 1,050/1,000 MB/s class, with IP65 dust and water resistance and roughly 3 m tested drop resistance; Samsung listed $287.99 and Best Buy also listed $287.99 during the October 2026 check. Better for field shooting, travel or outdoor and dusty use where the standard T7’s lack of IP rating is a meaningful risk; same three-year limited warranty. [3][17]
Kingston XS1000 1TB (SXS1000/1000G) — 10 Gbps, advertised up to 1,050/1,000 MB/s, five-year limited warranty, 28.7 g with USB-A-to-C cable and adapter. Better if warranty length and smallest size matter more than the T7’s optional hardware-password feature. [18][19]
Micro Center’s checked generic shipping-store view said zero shippable units and did not expose a reliable current national price. Listed warranty is three years. Better only if a verified authorized-retailer offer undercuts the T7 and password encryption is not essential. [20]
