Summary
A 2025 flagship 11.1.4-channel soundbar package with a front bar, two wireless rear speakers and a compact sealed subwoofer, built for enveloping movies and TV with Dolby Atmos. Check the 2026 firmware and eARC reliability before buying: multiple owners report audio dropping after the 1100.x updates, and Samsung released version 1102 on September 3, 2026.
Strengths
- Genuinely immersive movie surround: RTINGS and What Hi-Fi? tested the exact Q990F and praised balanced sound and believable surround.
- Compact bass: the redesigned sealed sub is smaller than the Q990D’s ported unit, with less rattling and stronger impact.
- Clear dialogue and flexible tuning: a native center output, Voice Enhance, Adaptive/Night modes and channel-level EQ.
- A home-theater hub for gaming: two HDMI 2.1 inputs carrying 4K/120 Hz passthrough.
- Credible music: TechRadar liked Atmos tracks, clear higher-pitched vocals and stage width, and What Hi-Fi? praised precision.
- In-box rears and sub: a single purchase for a four-unit cinematic system, unlike a standalone bar.
Weaknesses
- 2026 firmware and eARC trouble: a July 7, 2026 r/Soundbars discussion describes audio dropping after seven mostly trouble-free months, and other owners report eARC silence or wireless-sub cutouts after the 1100.x updates.
- Outcomes from 1100.4 conflict: one June 2026 owner said it fixed 5-GHz Wi-Fi stability, another said it newly caused disconnections.
- Version 1102 is available but not a proven cure: the changelog quoted in an owner thread is user-posted, not a signed manufacturer bulletin.
- Four separate mains connections: “wireless” rears and the sub still need AC outlets, and rears need placement or separately bought stands.
- Large bar and small display: at about 48.5 inches it can block a small TV’s stand or sensor, and the front dot-matrix display is hard to read from seating distance.

Sound quality
RTINGS’ controlled Q990F evaluation calls movies and dialogue excellent, with balanced sound and believable surround from physically separate satellites. What Hi-Fi? tested dialogue and effect placement on Blade Runner 2049 and Dune: Part Two and praised natural movement between speakers and strong overhead cues. TechRadar and Expert Reviews likewise commend the immersive surround. hears stronger impact and TechRadar found the compact dual-driver unit capable of room-shaking movie bass. On music, TechRadar liked Atmos tracks, clear higher-pitched vocals and stage width, while Expert Reviews found the sub a bit less nimble with rapid bass notes.
Firmware and eARC reliability
The leading real-world concern is 2026 firmware and eARC trouble. A July 7, 2026 r/Soundbars discussion describes Q990F audio periodically dropping after seven mostly trouble-free months, temporally associated with firmware updating. Other owners report eARC silence, Wi-Fi loss, stuck power-off, intermittent rear pops or wireless-sub cutouts after version 1100.x. Outcomes from 1100.4 conflict: one June 2026 owner said it fixed 5-GHz Wi-Fi stability, another said the update newly caused disconnections, and others had no faults. Samsung released version 1102 on September 3, 2026 as a USB update, but the changelog quoted in an owner thread was posted by a user rather than signed by the manufacturer, so treat the update as a fix to try rather than a proven cure. If repeated resets and cable swaps fail, document the TV, source, eARC configuration, serial and firmware for service. Do not say every Q990F is affected; the failure denominator is unknown.
Power, parts and running costs
“Wireless” rears and sub still need their own power outlets, and the two rear cabinets need placement or separately bought stands. Samsung’s Irish/XU technical table lists 41 W for the main bar, 19 W per rear and 48 W for the sub under operating conditions, plus 0.5 W standby each; that is a nominal 127 W across all four units and 2 W in standby, not a wattmeter measurement. At a hypothetical 4 hours a day at 127 W plus 20 hours at 2 W standby, yearly electricity works out to about 200 kWh, or roughly $50 a year at $0.25 per kWh. Spread over five years, Best Buy’s $999.99 works out to about $200 a year in capital, so the budget figure lands near $250 a year before tax, repairs and streaming. No mandatory subscription covers Dolby Atmos decoding, SpaceFit Sound Pro or local playback; paid music and video services are content costs, not a hardware fee. Genuine Q990F-specific replacement part numbers and prices for the sub, rears and remote were not found; a failed sub is a service matter.
Is it worth it?
Best Buy’s October 2026 listing shows $999.99 with a $1,999.99 reference value, and TechRadar reported the same $999 at Best Buy as a September 7, 2026 promotion. At $850 or below from an unquestionably authorized seller the package is a very strong buy, and $851–1,050 is attractive for a complete four-unit system. If you want only one bar, a standalone Sonos Arc Ultra is about $999 at launch comparison but needs separately bought surrounds and sub for comparable coverage.
Which model this is
This page covers the HW-Q990F/ZA, the US version of Samsung’s 2025 flagship 11.1.4-channel soundbar package, released in May 2025. The /ZC, /XU and /XA designations are regional variants with potentially different services and warranty obligations, though the basic acoustic hardware is similar. The 2026 HW-Q990H is a newer product with largely the same hardware plus software enhancements; do not present the Q990F as the latest Samsung flagship in October 2026.
