Samsung HW-Q990F: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-19

Summary

Samsung’s 2025 flagship 11.1.4 soundbar package — front bar, wireless sub and wireless rear satellites — is the top measured performer in RTINGS’ lineup, but the real-world caveats are firmware and dialogue: mid-2026 firmware 1100.4 is tied to periodic reboots, audio dropouts and HDMI-CEC input-switching failures, and Tom’s Guide found speech muffled with no competent dialogue booster. Running costs are just electricity — about $50 a year at $0.25 per kWh by Samsung’s listed wattage — with no mandatory subscription. It is a strong buy near $1,000 (Best Buy, October 2026) and hard to justify at the $1,999.99 MSRP.

Yearly running cost

No mandatory subscription: Dolby Atmos decoding, SpaceFit Sound Pro, Q-Symphony and local playback carry no recurring hardware fee, and paid music or video services are content costs. Electricity from Samsung’s Irish/XU technical table: 41 W main bar + 19 W per rear + 48 W sub = 127 W operating, 0.5 W standby each (2 W total). At a hypothetical 4 hours a day at 127 W plus 20 hours a day at 2 W standby, that is (0.127×4 + 0.002×20) × 365 = 200 kWh a year, about $50 a year at $0.25 per kWh; a full standby year is 17.52 kWh (about $4.38). Spread over five years, Best Buy’s $999.99 is about $200 a year in capital, so the budget figure lands near $250 a year before tax, repairs and streaming. [34][20]

When it is a good buy

Best Buy lists the HW-Q990F/ZA at $999.99 (October 2026) against a $1,999.99 reference value; Samsung US lists $1,599.99 marked down from $1,999.99; TechRadar reported $999.99 at Best Buy in July 2025 and again as a September 7, 2026 promotion; RTINGS’ member deal was $1,298 in October 2026; eBay completed used sales were $759.99 (June 28, 2026) and $840.99 (August 14, 2026). At $850 or below from an authorized seller it is a very strong buy, $851-1,050 is attractive for a complete four-unit system, and $1,051-1,250 is still defensible. The HW-Q930F 9.1.4 at $999.99 (Best Buy, October 2026) is the better choice only with a meaningful extra discount or fit constraints, and a standalone Sonos Arc Ultra (about $999 at launch comparison) suits a buyer who wants one bar and will add surrounds and sub later.
