Summary
A four-piece 11.1.4-channel Dolby Atmos system — main bar, wireless 8-inch subwoofer and two wireless rear speakers — with two HDMI 2.1 inputs that pass 4K/120Hz. Check the firmware situation before buying: a 2025 update bricked many units, and 2026 threads report a recurring audio-shutoff bug.
Strengths
- Immersive, three-dimensional Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, with effects placed above and behind the listener.
- Clear, detailed dialogue even in busy mixes.
- Powerful, well-integrated bass from the wireless 8-inch subwoofer.
- Two HDMI 2.1 inputs pass 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM for consoles and PC, a real upgrade over the 2023 Q990C.
- The wireless subwoofer and two rear speakers are included, so the full surround system arrives in one box.
- What Hi-Fi reported no dropouts from any component in extended testing.
Weaknesses
- A March 2025 over-the-network firmware update (1020.7) bricked many units, leaving them frozen on eARC and unresponsive to resets and the SmartThings app.
- A separate 2026 bug on firmware 1051 makes some bars go silent or freeze for 20–30 seconds until a power cycle, and owners report it persisting even after a mainboard replacement.
- Later firmware 1072 did not fix the audio cut-out for some users.
- The full 11.1.4 channels only engage in Surround, Game Pro and Adaptive Sound; Standard mode outputs just the source’s channel count.
- Music is weaker than movies, and WIRED and What Hi-Fi both suggest rivals are more musical.
- The small three-character display is hard to read from across the room.

What you get and how it sounds
Independent tests consistently rate the Q990D among the strongest full-surround soundbars of its generation. RTINGS tested it against its successors and found it compresses less in the bass at maximum volume than the newer Q990F. WIRED scored it 8/10 for detailed sound, dialogue clarity and overhead and surround effects. AVForums called it Best In Class and gave the sound system 10/10, highlighting immersive Atmos and DTS:X, the HDMI 2.1 connectivity and a powerful, well-integrated subwoofer. AVS Forum gave it a 2024 Top Choice Award, and What Hi-Fi made it an Awards 2024 winner, describing it as a complete Dolby Atmos system in a box. TechRadar called it the best Dolby Atmos soundbar on the market. In a 12-person blind panel run for the New York Times and Wirecutter, the Q990D system beat the Sonos Arc Ultra 8 to 4 in the panel and 11 to 1 on action films, with a measured speech-intelligibility score of 92 against the Arc Ultra’s 84.
The 11.1.4 label is a marketing-style figure rather than 11 discrete channels: treat it as a 5.1.4-style surround layout with extra wide and side-firing drivers. In Standard mode the bar only outputs the channel count of the source signal, so the full 11.1.4 is only engaged by the Surround, Game Pro and Adaptive Sound modes.
HDMI 2.1 and gaming
The headline change from the 2023 Q990C is HDMI 2.1: two HDMI inputs and an eARC output that pass 4K at 120Hz with VRR and ALLM, plus Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HDR10+ passthrough. That matters for a PS5, Xbox Series X or gaming PC, where the older Q990C could not pass 120Hz through the bar.
Firmware and software risk
In March 2025 Samsung pushed an over-the-network firmware update, 1020.7, that bricked many Q990D units, freezing them on eARC and leaving them unresponsive to resets and to the SmartThings app. The update also affected some Q800D and S801D bars; units updated from a USB drive were reportedly unaffected. Samsung suspended the over-the-network update and later offered free repairs regardless of warranty, and T3 reported that the fix needs an in-person repair rather than another update. RTINGS documents the event in its review changelog.
A second wave of reports, on firmware 1051 in 2026, describes Q990D and other Q-series bars randomly going silent or freezing for 20–30 seconds and needing a power cycle. In Samsung’s US community threads, owners say the problem persists for some even after a mainboard replacement, and that later firmware 1072 did not fix the cut-out for everyone. No failure rate has been published, so treat this as a known software risk rather than a hardware defect. If you buy, consider turning off automatic updates and updating over USB.
The Q990D launched at $1,999.99 on Samsung US and £1,699 in the UK. It discounted quickly: Digital Trends reported Target at $2,000 in September 2024 and Best Buy at $1,500 in June 2025, and the New York Times and Wirecutter comparison priced the four-piece system at $1,299 in April 2026. Aggregator snapshots around the same time put it near $1,300.
Running costs are minimal. There is no proprietary media subscription and no consumable part; the only ongoing cost is electricity and whatever streaming services you already use. Replacement parts come through Samsung’s certified partners.
On value, $1,500 or below is a strong buy for a full physical surround system with HDMI 2.1 passthrough; $1,500–$1,800 is fair now that the Q990F successor and the Sonos Arc Ultra compete on price; above $1,900 you are paying near launch money for last year’s model.
Which model this is
It replaces the 2023 HW-Q990C, whose main hardware difference is the older HDMI spec, and has itself been replaced by the 2025 HW-Q990F and the 2026 HW-Q990H. There is no widely reported hardware revision of the Q990D during its sale life. Don’t mix it with the Q990C or B (different HDMI) or with the Q990F/H successors.
