Samsung HW-Q990D: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-20
Summary
The HW-Q990D is a four-piece 11.1.4 Dolby Atmos system — bar, 8-inch wireless subwoofer and two wireless rear speakers — and independent tests rate it among the best full-surround soundbars for movies. The dominant owner signal is software, not hardware: a March 2025 firmware update bricked many units, and 2026 threads report a recurring audio-shutoff bug. Running costs are limited to electricity and subscriptions, and it is a strong buy at $1,500 or below and weak near its $1,999.99 launch price. [3][8][14][25][46]
Common problems and fixes
- Firmware 1020.7 bricking (March 2025) — an over-the-network update left many units frozen on eARC, unresponsive to resets and the SmartThings app, and also hit some Q800D and S801D bars; USB-initiated updates were reportedly unaffected. Samsung suspended the update and offered free repairs regardless of warranty, and T3 reported the fix needs an in-person repair rather than another update. [8][9][10][11][12][37]
- Firmware 1051 audio-shutoff/freeze (2026) — community threads report the bar and other Q-series bars going silent or offline for 20–30 seconds, or freezing until a power cycle; some owners say it persists even after a mainboard replacement and that later firmware 1072 did not fix the cut-out. [14][15][16][44]
- Rear-speaker wireless dropout — an aggregated editorial flags recurring rear-speaker connectivity/dropout reports across Q990 generations, and one Q990H owner needed support chat to fix left-rear pairing. [32][20]
- eARC and sound cutting out — Reddit threads describe eARC issues and sound cutting out, with workarounds including power-cycling the bar/sub, reseating HDMI, or switching connection type. [41][42]
- Weak height channels and channel separation — one owner who upgraded to Sony’s modular Trio described the Q990D’s height channels as weak and its channel separation as subpar, with a trapezoidal soundstage. [17]
Parts and consumables
- No consumables — no filters, pods or subscriptions; the box holds the soundbar, wireless subwoofer, two wireless rear speakers, an HDMI cable, wall-mount kit, rubber feet and a remote with battery, with no optical cable. [2][7]
Yearly running cost
Running costs are minimal: there is no proprietary media subscription and no consumable part, so the ongoing spend is electricity plus whatever streaming services you already use. Samsung rates the bar at 41 W, each rear speaker at 19 W and the subwoofer at 26 W, with standby at 0.5 W. [2]
When it is a good buy
- At ~$1,500 or below it is a strong buy for a full physical surround system with HDMI 2.1 passthrough; Best Buy had it at $1,500 in June 2025 and the New York Times/Wirecutter comparison priced the four-piece system at $1,299 in April 2026. [25][46]
- $1,500–1,800 is fair, but compare the Q990F successor and Sonos Arc Ultra, since discounts and the newer model narrow the gap. [3][4][7]
- Above $1,900, near the $1,999.99 launch price on Samsung US, it is weak-to-fair; Target was reported at $2,000 in September 2024. [1][26]
- Samsung HW-Q990F ($1,599.99) — the better choice if you want the newer model with Chromecast support; the Q990D wins on bass compression at max volume per RTINGS. [3][4][1]
- Sonos Arc Ultra — the better choice if you prefer a more musical sound; the Q990D beat it 8–4 in a 12-person blind panel and 11–1 on action films. [46]
- Sony Trio (modular) — the better choice if you want stronger height channels and channel separation; one owner moved from the Q990D to it. [17]
