Summary
A short, wide book-style foldable: 201 g closed, a 5.5-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch tablet when you open it. Check what you give up before you buy: no telephoto lens, no S Pen, no half-open Flex Mode, and a cracked inner screen runs $419 to $579 at Samsung’s suggested repair rates.
Strengths
- A genuinely compact openable tablet at 201 g, with a 7.6-inch inner screen that suits wide video and reading.
- Flagship-class work: Tom’s Guide ran three apps side by side without evident delays.
- Better battery than the Fold7: 12h19m in Tom’s Guide’s 5G web test against 10h44m, and 70% charge in 30 minutes.
- Two 50MP rear cameras that hold up in daylight and low light, with a better ultrawide than the Fold7.
- Samsung publishes inner-screen service prices up front, so a screen repair is not a mystery cost.
Weaknesses
- No telephoto lens, so every zoom past 1× is digital and detail drops away fast.
- No Flex Mode: the phone will not hold a half-open angle for calls, and the hinge springs open past 90 degrees.
- No S Pen digitizer, so the inner screen cannot take handwriting, sketches or annotations.
- IP48 does not mean dust-tight, and grit along the crease is a real exposure.
- Long gaming sessions throttle: TechRadar saw Wild Life Extreme stress scores fall from 5,087 to 2,083.
- Owners report awkward websites and typing on the short cover screen, and one August 2026 owner returned the phone over heat and speaker sound.

The wide shape and what it does to apps
The Fold8 is the short, wide take on Samsung’s book-style foldable. Folded, it measures 123.9 × 81.9 × 9.7 mm and weighs 201 g; opened, the 5.5-inch cover display (1972 × 1248, 10:16) becomes a 7.6-inch 2448 × 1848 inner screen at 4:3. Tom’s Guide and TechRadar both liked how it sits in a pocket and how the wide inner screen handles video and reading, and both describe the crease as much less visible than on the Fold7 without being gone.
The width has a cost. Tom’s Guide and TechRadar both found major apps and sites that do not fit the inner screen or handle the aspect switch well, and one August 2026 owner returned the phone partly because mobile webpages and typing on the short cover screen felt awkward. A July 2026 owner thread was full of praise for reading and for the size, so this is a matter of taste: at 81.9 mm wide folded, the cover screen needs two thumbs, and if you type a lot on it, handle one in a shop first.
There is no half-open mode. Samsung’s own Fold8 FAQ describes the new hinge as made for fully closed or fully open use, an October 2026 buyer post shows the phone springing itself open from a 90-degree angle, and Tom’s Guide lists the missing half-fold video calling as one of the drawbacks. It is a design choice, not a toggle left off, and forcing a partly open position against the hinge is worth avoiding.
The crease is reduced, not removed. Some owners in an October 2026 discussion still see or feel the fold line while others rarely notice it in ordinary use. Samsung’s community moderator guidance is to leave the factory film on the inner screen alone and use an authorized technician if it lifts, scratches or bubbles.
Performance, multitasking and heat
The Fold8 runs Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy with Android 17 and One UI 9, and Samsung promises up to seven OS upgrades and seven years of security patches. Tom’s Guide measured Geekbench 6 at 3,659 single and 11,020 multi; TechRadar reported 3,253 and 7,975 with a differently configured setup, so neither pair of numbers describes every unit.
Multitasking is the reason to buy a foldable this small. Samsung’s multiwindow runs up to three apps at once, and Tom’s Guide ran three together without evident delays. The 256GB and 512GB models come with 12GB of RAM and the 1TB model with 16GB, which helps when several windows stay open.
Heat is the counterweight. TechRadar’s 3DMark Wild Life Extreme stress run fell from 5,087 at the peak to 2,083 at the bottom, which is real throttling under sustained load. One August 2026 owner who returned the phone reported uncomfortable heat, weaker speaker sound and dislike of mobile webpages; that is one person’s experience rather than a defect rate. The Fold8 only reached shops in August 2026, so no credible model-specific long-term dataset exists yet, and most of the screen-breaking stories in the Fold megathreads come from the Fold8 Ultra, a different chassis.
Camera: two lenses, no zoom
The rear cameras are a 50MP main at f/1.8 and a 50MP ultrawide at f/1.9, with 10MP selfie cameras on both screens. Daylight and low-light results came out well in the direct tests, and Tom’s Guide found the ultrawide keeps more detail than the Fold7’s.
What you do not get is a telephoto. Zoom is digital and reaches 10×, and independent photo comparisons show the detail loss against the Fold8 Ultra’s 3× optical lens and the Razr Fold’s dedicated telephoto. My FanCam can crop video to follow a subject, but it depends on the software detecting a person and it is a crop, not a zoom sensor. Without Flex Mode there is also no built-in way to stand the phone up for hands-free video, so a case or a stand has to do that job.
Battery, charging and the accessories you still need
The 4,800mAh silicon-carbon cell is bigger than the Fold7’s 4,400mAh, and Samsung claims up to 26h of video playback under its own conditions. Tom’s Guide’s 5G web browsing test gave the Fold8 12h19m, against 14h33m for the Fold8 Ultra, 10h44m for the Fold7 and 14h44m for the Motorola Razr Fold in the same protocol. Tom’s Guide also recorded 70% charge in 30 minutes, while TechRadar measured 43% in 15 minutes and a full charge in about 65 minutes by another method. These tests do not combine with Samsung’s video claim.
Charging hardware is a separate purchase. The box holds the phone, a USB-C data cable and a SIM ejector, and no charger. Samsung’s 45W USB-PD PPS adapter is $39.99 on its own, or $49.99 as a kit with a 5A USB-C cable. That is a one-off cost, not a subscription.
Wireless charging runs at 20W, but the bare Fold8 has no magnets inside it, so alignment pads and magnetic wallets need a Fold8-specific magnetic case. Samsung sells a Clear Case at $49.99, a Silicone Magnet Case at $89.99 and a Hinge Protection Magnet Case at $74.99. Do not buy Fold8 Ultra cases, because the body is a different size. If you want a hard front frame, skip the clear case: it has no rigid front piece, dated buyer reviews complain about a dented front edge, and one customer reported a dent after a fall. Hinge-protection cases have their own trade-off, as an October 2026 owner reported lint collecting and a crunchy fold under one.
Repairs, warranty and running costs
The inner screen is the expensive part. Samsung’s US service menu lists suggested prices for the standard Fold8 of $419 for an inner screen-only repair and $579 for a full inner screen module, with $139 for the outer cover glass. The Fold8 Ultra is priced separately at $479 and $639, so check that a quote names the standard model. These are suggested service prices before tax and local fees, and Samsung says screen-only repairs can be mailed in.
Accidental damage is not a warranty job. The US limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the original eligible retail purchaser and excludes accidents, ordinary wear, cosmetic damage, abnormal dust and moisture exposure and unauthorized repairs or screen pressure. Samsung’s warranty page needs a serial number to show exact coverage months, and one year is the common US standard. Seven years of security updates is not seven years of hardware warranty.
Optional insurance was offered at $13 a month, or as a promotional two-year plan at $69 shown against $269. That promotional price is not a guaranteed annual premium, and deductibles differ by tier, so read the screen-damage terms for this model before you buy the cover.
Running costs after the purchase are $0 a year for hardware subscriptions and consumables. Electricity is the only ongoing figure: 4.8Ah at 3.85V with 80% charging efficiency is 23.1Wh per full charge, and 365 charges a year come to about 8.43kWh, or roughly $1.69 a year at an illustrative $0.20 per kWh, and about $0.84 if you charge every other day. Carrier bills and paid cloud storage sit outside the handset’s own costs. Budget the extras separately: the official Clear Case at $49.99 plus the official 45W adapter at $39.99 comes to $89.98 before tax, and a magnet case replaces the clear case rather than adding to it. There is no published US spare part number or price for the battery, hinge or outer display module.
Is it worth it?
Prices moved around a lot in October 2026. Samsung US listed the 256GB Lavender at $1,899.99, the 512GB at $2,099.99 and the 1TB at $2,499.99, and Samsung’s own store advertised a $200 instant discount without a trade-in in broad marketing while the captured configuration still showed $1,899.99. Best Buy sold the 256GB Graphite (SM-F971UZKAXAA, SKU 6681692) at $1,649.99, $250 below its displayed $1,899.99 comparison value, and its promotional hub showed $1,849.99 for the 512GB. SammyGuru’s October 15, 2026 roundup had Samsung direct at $1,699.99 in some colors, which was a dated offer rather than a standing one.
What those numbers mean: below $1,500 a new factory-unlocked Fold8 with a US warranty would be very attractive, though no verified in-stock retailer transaction was found at that level. Between $1,500 and $1,699 it is competitive for the compact shape and the 7.6-inch screen, and Best Buy’s $1,649.99 sits there. Between $1,700 and $1,799 it is borderline. From $1,800 to $1,900 you are at Samsung’s own list price for the standard model, and above $1,900 for 256GB the value is weak against that $1,649.99 evidence.
At $1,899.99 the standard Fold8 stops making sense on paper, because Samsung was also selling the Fold8 Ultra at $1,899.99 as a $200 promotion from $2,099.99. The Ultra has an 8-inch inner screen, a 6.5-inch cover screen, a 5,000mAh battery, a 200MP main camera with a 3× optical telephoto and Flex Mode; it weighs 215 g and folds into a taller shape. The compact Fold8 still earns its place if you want something that fits in a pocket and opens into a tablet. If the standard model sits near $1,650 while the Ultra sits at $1,899.99, take the standard one; when they cost the same, take the Ultra.
Two rivals are worth knowing. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is a conventional slab with a 5,000mAh battery, multiple optical telephotos and an integrated S Pen; it reached 16h10m in the same test and has no folding screen at all.
Whatever you decide, test the phone inside the return window: calls, mobile web, the camera, wireless charging, 5G, the charger, the fingerprint sensor and app rotation on both screens. Look at the seam, the inner film and the hinge in good light, confirm the screen opens without force or grinding, photograph any marks that were there on day one and keep the receipt.
Which model this is
This page covers the standard Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, the compact 2026 book-style foldable, in the US factory-unlocked SM-F971U1 form factor, with 256GB Graphite SM-F971UZKAXAA and 256GB Lavender SM-F971ULVAXAA as the color and storage SKUs and higher capacities carrying their own numbers. Storage is not fixed in the product name, so check the capacity before comparing prices: the $1,899.99 Samsung figure is for 256GB, and the 1TB upgrade is $600 at list price.
The Amazon listing for this model is ASIN B0H126B3KV.
It is not the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra (SM-F976U1), which has an 8-inch inner screen, a 6.5-inch cover screen, a 5,000mAh battery, a 200MP main camera with a 3× optical telephoto and Flex Mode, and it is not the Galaxy S26 Ultra slab phone. The standard Fold8 is the one with a 5.5-inch cover display, a 7.6-inch inner display, 201 g of weight, no telephoto, no S Pen and no half-open Flex Mode.
