Summary
Samsung’s 2023 flagship Android tablet, with an 11-inch 120 Hz AMOLED screen, an S Pen in the box and IP68 water resistance. Check your charging setup before you buy: no power adapter ships in the box, and measured battery life runs about nine hours against Samsung’s 15-hour claim.
Strengths
- The AMOLED panel is the main upgrade over the Tab S8, and Tom’s Guide measured 592 nits adaptive with Delta-E 0.26.
- The S Pen is in the box, with 2.8 ms latency and magnetic charging on the back panel.
- IP68 means the tablet is dust tight and rated for 1.5 m of water for 30 minutes.
- Four AKG-tuned speakers and a dedicated microSD slot for extra storage.
- Samsung DeX turns the tablet into a desktop with windowed apps when you want one.
- One GSMArena owner reports two years of daily use on a 12 GB/256 GB unit, citing enough memory and power for daily tasks.
Weaknesses
- No charger in the box, so 45 W fast charging needs an adapter you buy separately.
- Measured battery life is about nine hours of web surfing, roughly three hours less than the Tab S8.
- Samsung claims up to 15 hours; TechRadar measured about 8 hours of video and 4 to 5 hours of gaming.
- TechRadar saw about 25% of the charge gone after a full day asleep on the tablet.
- Thermals throttle sustained gaming, with frame drops in Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel as it heated near the camera.

Battery life and charging
Tom’s Guide measured about nine hours of web surfing at 150 nits, and nine hours and 14 minutes with the screen locked at 60 Hz. TechRadar measured about eight hours of video at medium brightness and four to five hours of gaming, then found roughly 25% of the charge gone after a full day in sleep. Samsung’s spec sheet claims up to 15 hours, and none of the testers reached it.
Charging is 45 W over USB-C, with a full charge in about an hour on a 45 W adapter according to Samsung and about three hours on a generic charger according to TechRadar. The catch is that no adapter comes in the box, so add that to your budget along with, if you want a keyboard, the Book Cover Keyboard.
Display, pen, sound and performance
The 11-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel runs at 120 Hz and carries HDR10+. Tom’s Guide measured 592 nits adaptive and 749 nits on HDR content, with 185.2% sRGB and 131.2% DCI-P3 coverage in Vibrant mode and a Delta-E of 0.26. In Natural mode coverage drops to 111.3% sRGB and 78.8% DCI-P3, which some buyers prefer for accurate color. Samsung and TechRadar quote a peak of 1,750 nits, and the gap against the measured 749 nits is likely a peak-spot reading compared with a full-screen one.
The S Pen is the reason many buyers stretch to this model. It ships in the box, draws with 2.8 ms latency, works over Bluetooth, and charges magnetically when you clip it to the back. Sound comes from four AKG-tuned stereo speakers, loud enough for video in a room, and there is no 3.5 mm headphone jack, so you need Bluetooth or USB-C audio. Netflix HDR is the weak spot: the tablet has no Dolby Vision, which TechRadar flagged as a quality loss on that service.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy handles everyday work and DeX sessions well. Tom’s Guide logged Geekbench 5 scores of 1,555 single-core and 5,164 multi-core, and 3DMark Wild Life Unlimited at 14,831. Heat is the limit under sustained load: TechRadar saw frame drops in Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel as the tablet heated up around the camera and CPU area.
Samsung DeX gives you a desktop-style windowed interface on the tablet, and the Tab S9 can also work as a wireless second screen for a Galaxy Book laptop. Software support is the part to budget for: the tablet shipped on Android 13 with up to four major Android version updates promised, and no extension beyond that has been confirmed. Storage figures are before system and app overhead. One GSMArena owner reports two years of daily use on a 12 GB/256 GB unit, citing enough memory and power for daily tasks and praising the microSD plus SIM combination.
Ownership costs, warranty and repair
There is no running cost for the pen, since it is included, and no subscription for anything the tablet does on its own. Optional extras are the Book Cover Keyboard, listed at $199 when the tablet launched (Tom’s Guide, August 2023), a 45 W charger, a microSD card for expansion, and Samsung Care+ extended coverage. The keyboard cover and the charger are the two most likely purchases, because neither is in the box.
Warranty is the standard one year for Samsung tablets in the US. Tablets launched in 2023 or later may also get limited international warranty service. Repairs go through Samsung authorized service centers, and parts availability is not documented publicly. A self-repair program exists for some Galaxy devices but is not confirmed for the Tab S9. Nobody has published a failure rate for this model, so treat the battery complaints as a known annoyance rather than a defect.
Is it worth it?
Tom’s Guide recorded launch pricing of $799 for the 8 GB/128 GB model and $919 for 12 GB/256 GB in August 2023. On those numbers the Tab S9 was a strong Android tablet: AMOLED 120 Hz screen, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, IP68 and an S Pen in the box.
Value depends on who buys it.
Which model this is
This is the base Galaxy Tab S9 with an 11-inch screen, model SM-X710 for Wi-Fi and SM-X716B for the 5G version with nano-SIM and eSIM. Wi-Fi units have no cellular radio. The 12.4-inch S9+, the 14.6-inch S9 Ultra and the S9 FE and FE+ models use different chipsets and displays, so they are not the same tablet. Colors at launch were Beige and Graphite, and the tablet was announced in July 2023 and released in August 2023.
