Summary
A 2022 Android flagship tablet with an 11-inch 120Hz screen, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and an S Pen in the box. The panel is LCD, not the AMOLED of the larger S8+ and S8 Ultra, so check which size you actually want before buying.
Strengths
- The 120Hz LCD is bright and colorful, and scrolling feels smooth.
- Quad AKG-tuned speakers get loud and support Dolby Atmos, though bass is thin.
- Cameras are capable for a tablet and good for video calls, with auto-framing that works in Zoom, Meet, Teams and Duo.
- DeX mode gives a multi-window, desktop-like view with a keyboard and mouse.
- microSD expansion, Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E round out the hardware.
Weaknesses
- The 11-inch panel is LCD, so it cannot match the contrast of the AMOLED S8+ and S8 Ultra.
- PCMag found face recognition unreliable; the side fingerprint sensor is the practical unlock.
- Benchmark performance trails M1 iPads and even some older iPads.
- Android has fewer pro-level creative apps than iPadOS, and some apps resize poorly in DeX.
- First-party keyboard covers are expensive and cramped, and the combo can push the cost near $1,000.
- Rear camera quality drops in ultra-wide, zoomed and low-light shots, and there is no night mode.

Full research notes and sources
Battery life and charging
Tom’s Guide’s lab measured 12 h 52 min of continuous web and video use at 150 nits, or 12 h 59 min with the refresh rate locked to 60Hz. PCMag measured 7 h 25 min of full-brightness video streaming. That gap is methodology, not a defect: one test runs the screen dim, the other at maximum.
Charging supports 45W. PCMag reports a full charge in about 80 minutes on a 45W-or-greater charger, and Tom’s Guide logged 23% in 15 minutes and 45% in 30 minutes.
Display and performance
Tom’s Guide’s colorimeter measured 480 nits peak at the center and 463 nits average across the screen, while PCMag describes the panel as “600-nit”; different methods and labels, so treat the exact figure loosely. Color coverage was 101.1% sRGB in Natural mode and 157.8% in Vivid mode.
Tom’s Guide’s Geekbench 5 multicore score was 3,228, which trails Apple’s M1 tablets. Nobody has published measured contrast, response time or sustained-throttling figures for the exact 11-inch model, so treat those numbers as unknown.
Software support and repairs
Samsung guarantees Android version upgrades through Android 16 and security updates through the Android 17 cycle. The tablet is a sealed metal-and-glass unibody, so the battery and screen are not owner-serviceable, and no teardown score was published for this exact model. Samsung’s standard limited regional warranty applies.
The recurring costs are the keyboard cover and any charger not in the box: the Book Cover Keyboard Slim is $139, and PCMag cites a $199.99 Book Cover Keyboard.
Value
At launch the Tab S8 sold for $699.99 (128GB) and $779.99 (256GB), matching the hardware of the iPad Air and 11-inch iPad Pro while losing on ecosystem and benchmarks. Now that it sits in the $500s, it makes sense for buyers who want Android and Samsung features: S Pen in the box, expandable storage and DeX.
Walmart listed it at $549 and Samsung at $599. If you mainly need pro creative apps or top-tier performance, compare iPads at the same budget.
