Samsung Galaxy S26 (256GB): problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-19
Summary
The compact 6.3-inch flagship’s weak points are the charging situation and value, not the hardware: 25W wired charging is unchanged since 2020, the box has no charger, and battery life is only average. Running costs are essentially zero beyond buying a USB-C charger if you do not own one — there are no subscriptions or consumables.
Common problems and fixes
- Average battery life — PCMag’s video-streaming test ran 15 hours 10 minutes, about an hour better than the Galaxy S25, and CNET found the phone lasts about a day of regular use; heavy users may need to charge before the day ends. Fix: no hardware fix; the S26+ has a 4,900mAh cell. [2][3]
- No built-in magnetic charging — Qi2 needs a separate Samsung case. Fix: buy the case if magnetic charging matters. [2][3]
- Camera hardware is largely unchanged from the Galaxy S25 — most improvements are software, and the raised camera module makes the phone wobble on a flat table. Fix: a case steadies it on a desk. [2][3]
- $100 price increase over the S25 — CNET called the jump hard to justify given the modest hardware changes; the S25 256GB was $860 at the time of that review, only $40 less. Fix: none — this is a value argument, not a defect. [2]
Parts and consumables
- USB-C cable — included in the box; no charger and no earphones. [3]
- Self Repair parts — Samsung’s Self Repair Program with Encompass offers step-by-step guides and genuine parts for some models; S26 availability and pricing were not confirmed. [2]
Yearly running cost
No subscriptions, no proprietary consumables and no required services. The electricity cost of charging was not measured in any source, and the only added purchase is a USB-C charger if you do not already own one. Samsung’s trade-in credits of up to $400+ lower the effective purchase price but are not a running cost. [1][3]
When it is a good buy
Samsung lists the 256GB model at $899.99 (2026) [1]. The Galaxy S25 started at $800 for 128GB, and CNET saw the S25 256GB at $860, only $40 less [2]. At $799 or below the S26 is a much stronger value; at $900 and up, compare against the Pixel 10, the iPhone 17 and the S26+ first. [2][3][4]
