Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

The Ryobi P440 is a discontinued 18V ONE+ cordless 1/4-sheet finishing sander sold as a bare tool, so it mainly makes sense if you already own Ryobi 18V batteries. Before you buy, check the price against the newer PCL401B, which Ryobi lists at $59.00 tool-only.

Strengths

  • Runs on any Ryobi 18V ONE+ battery, so ONE+ owners can use packs they already have.
  • 12,000 RPM no-load with orbital action and a 1/16 in orbit suits finish work.
  • Onboard dust bag plus a vacuum port for shop-vacuum extraction.
  • Lock-on switch for longer passes.
  • 3-year limited warranty with proof of purchase.
  • The repair sheet documents a full parts list with part numbers — rare support for a discontinued budget sander.

Weaknesses

  • Discontinued on Ryobi’s US site; new units are old stock and the current successor is a different model.
  • Bare tool only: the battery and charger cost extra if you are not already on ONE+.
  • The vacuum adaptor is not included, so shop-vacuum dust collection needs a separate purchase.
  • No independent instrumented test exists, and owner feedback amounts to a single video review.
  • Dimensions and weight are published nowhere in the manual or repair sheet.

Dust collection and paper

The P440 takes standard quarter-sheet sandpaper — no adhesive backing needed — held by two clamps, and the included paper punch perforates the sheet so dust can pull through the pad. An onboard dust bag handles light work, and a vacuum port accepts a shop vacuum, but the adaptor itself is not in the box. The manual also advises removing the sandpaper shortly after use so the adhesive does not harden on the pad.

Repairs, parts and running costs

Repairability is above average for a discontinued cordless sander: the repair sheet lists every assembly with part numbers — housing, motor and switch assembly, fan, fan guide, ball bearing (6601 2RS CW), actuator, retaining plate, post cushion, paper clamp, paper punch, plate-with-cushion assembly, platen assembly, dust bag assembly, optional hose adaptor, labels and screws. The sheet exists in two revisions (Rev:01 dated 12-19-16, Rev:02 dated 1-19-17) that differ only in the included sandpaper grits; no mechanical revision is documented.

Maintenance is basic: clean with cloths, keep solvents off the plastic, never cover the ventilation openings (the manual warns of motor overheating), and use only identical replacement parts. Running costs are quarter-sheet sandpaper in 80/120/180/220 grit, replacement dust bags, and platen or paper-clamp parts from the repair sheet. The battery and charger are a separate cost if you do not already own ONE+ packs.

Owner feedback

Evidence here is thin. An affiliate roundup at johnharvards.com covers the P440 among Ryobi 1/4-sheet sanders and repeats the listing features — rubberized hex grip, removable dust bag, vacuum port, lock-on switch. No P440-specific complaint thread was found; r/ryobi threads about sanders cover the P411 random-orbit sander, not the P440.

Is it worth it?

Value depends on the price you actually pay, which is the problem: the P440 is discontinued and its price could not be verified from the sources checked. At a low used or old-stock price it is a reasonable finish sander for light-to-medium work, given the 12,000 RPM rating, orbital action, dust bag, vacuum port and 3-year warranty. Paying more than $59 for a used P440 means paying a premium over the newer PCL401B, which Ryobi lists at $59.00 tool-only with a higher 14,000 OPM no-load speed. For shop-bound work the corded S652DGK lists at $49.00 at Home Depot. If you do not already own ONE+ batteries, the PCL401K1 kit lists at $116.99-$124.00 from Ryobi and Direct Tools Outlet, which erodes the advantage.

Which model this is

This page covers the Ryobi P440 One+ 18V 12,000 RPM 1/4 sheet palm sander with onboard dust bag — the bare-tool listing is ASIN B06Y8QWVVJ. The operator’s manual is part number 961152682 (28 pages, English/French/Spanish). Ryobi’s US site no longer lists the P440; the current cordless 1/4-sheet successor is the PCL401B (14,000 OPM, tool only) and the corded equivalent is the S652DGK (2 A, 14,000 OPM). Those are different, newer models — don’t conflate them with the P440.
