Ryobi P440: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-19
Summary
The Ryobi P440 is a discontinued 18V ONE+ cordless 1/4-sheet finishing sander sold as a bare tool, so it only makes sense if you already own ONE+ batteries. Running costs are quarter-sheet sandpaper, replacement dust bags and platen or paper-clamp parts, plus the battery and charger if you are not already on the platform. It is worth buying at a low used or old-stock price, because Ryobi no longer lists the model and the current successor costs $59.00.
Common problems and fixes
- Vacuum adaptor is not included — the sander has a vacuum port for shop-vacuum dust collection, but only the port ships in the box, so the adaptor has to be bought separately before dust extraction works. [1][2]
- Discontinued, so new units are old stock — Ryobi’s US site lists nothing for the model, and the listed successor PCL401B is a different, newer tool; the 3-year limited warranty needs proof of purchase, which old stock makes harder to supply. [1][3][4]
- Bare tool only — the battery and charger are separate purchases if you are not already on the ONE+ platform. [1][2]
- Dimensions and weight are unpublished — neither the operator’s manual nor the repair sheets state them, so clearance on a workbench cannot be checked before buying. [1][6][7]
- Included sandpaper count is inconsistent — the repair sheets list 3 sheets, with different grits in each revision, while one retailer listing says 4 medium-grit pads. [6][7][2]
Parts and consumables
- Quarter-sheet sandpaper, 80/120/180/220 grit — standard 1/4-sheet paper with no adhesive backing, held by two clamps; replaced as it wears. [1][6][7][2]
- Dust bag assembly — listed with a part number in the repair-sheet parts list. [6][7]
- Platen assembly, paper clamps and paper punch — documented part numbers; the punch perforates the sheet so dust can pull through the pad. [6][7]
- Ball bearing, 6601 2RS CW — listed in the repair-sheet parts list. [6][7]
- Hose adaptor (optional) — the repair sheet lists it as an optional part for shop-vacuum extraction; it is not in the box. [6][7]
Yearly running cost
Quarter-sheet sandpaper in 80/120/180/220 grit, replacement dust bags, and platen or paper-clamp parts from the repair sheet. The battery and charger are a separate cost if you do not already own ONE+ packs. Not enough data for a dollar figure.
When it is a good buy
The P440’s own price could not be verified from the sources checked, because Ryobi no longer lists the model. Compare any used or old-stock price against the current alternatives: Ryobi lists the PCL401B at $59.00 tool-only (Ryobi, October 2026) [3] and the PCL401K1 kit at $116.99 (Ryobi, October 2026) [4] to $124.00 (Direct Tools Outlet, October 2026) [9], and the corded S652DGK at $49.00 (Home Depot, October 2026) [8]. Paying more than $59 for a used P440 means paying a premium over the newer PCL401B, which runs at 14,000 OPM no-load against the P440’s 12,000 RPM. Alternatives: the PCL401B is the better choice when you want a newer and faster tool; the corded S652DGK is the better choice for shop-bound work; the PCL401K1 kit is the better choice if you do not already own ONE+ batteries.
